2012 4chan Summer Cup knockout stage

The knockout stage for the 2012 4chan Summer Cup was held on the 20th and 21st of July, 2012. The format was such that the top-ranked teams of the Group Stage advanced automatically to the quarter finals, while other teams were matched up randomly to compete in an eight-team preliminary round to decide who would advance to the quarter-final stage. The manner of the draw for the knockout stage was not without controversy. For more information, see 2012 SC Bracket Scandal.

The teams to advance to the quarter finals with byes were /m/, /int/, /sp/ and /toy/. /jp/, /tg/, /pol/, /d/, /x/, /k/, /n/ and /co/ all competed in the preliminary round.

Preliminary Round

The atmosphere around /jp/ was tense as manager Doogie had barely staved off a mutiny within his own coaching staff over the past week, and he hoped that sense of urgency spread to his team. /jp/ got off to a great start against /tg/ in the first half as team captain "Get Out of /jp/" scored the first goal and Meido made several amazing saves as their keeper to keep that lead. But a rousing speech by TheDM brought up the spirits of /tg/s offensive duo of Creed and Doomrider, as they combined for 3 goals to which /jp/ had no answer. After shaking TheDM's hand, Doogie ran out of the stadium as fast as his legs could carry him, hoping to catch a flight to Japan before the Supporter's Group found him.

The /pol/ team was looking forward to facing their /int/ comrades in the next stage of the cup, but they found themselves facing a solid /d/ team that put up a hard fight. /d/'s team captain Consentacles reportedly spent the entire week putting the fear of an angry tentacled god into his defense so that /pol/'s offense would not get through, and /pol/ likewise kept /d/'s probing offense out of their goal for the most part. Eventually, Haigure managed to shoot through a hole in /pol/'s defense on a free kick, putting /d/ ahead for what remained of the match.

To the surprise of many observers, /x/'s match against /k/ was relatively free of spookiness compared to the final match of the Group Stage. The Grifter attempted to con members of /k/s defense before the game to let him score, and his mind-games strategy seemed to work at first, but Deagle Brand Deagle answered each of the Grifter's goals with one of his own. The winning goal was scored by /k/'s perennial backup Ivan Chesnokov, who had clinched his first goal ever after being subbed in the 61st minute. Dead Bart had a number of chances to take the lead or equalize for /x/, but could not convert any of them, including a wide shot in the 88th minute.

/n/ took the field against a pumped and eager /co/ team looking to move forward in the tournament. However, /co/'s cup dreams came to a sudden stop when both of /co/'s keepers spent the previous day partying instead of practicing for the game. /n/'s I Like Trains scored when The Boulder lost his grip on an early shot, and /co/ never recovered, missing several chances to tie against /n/'s keeper Dykes On Bikes. /co/'s star Donald was found drinking in a local bar after the game, muttering in between swigs of booze, "I shoulda made that shot. I should made that shot. I shoulda...I shoulda..." until he spotted the line judge who axed his one goal on an offside ruling. Our correspondent reports that Donald broke off half of his bottle and began working his way through the crowd. The fate of both Donald and the line judge remains unknown until their court date.

Quarter Finals

/m/ and /tg/ both hyped their respective teams right up to the start of their match, and it showed as both offenses made several shots on each other, most of them missing. /tg/ struck first with a goal by Creed off a bad pass by Ultraman, rattling the /m/ players until the end of the first half. with the help of Ray Amuro, the /m/ team calmed themselves down and made smarter decisions in the second half. Gundam RX-78-2 scored two goals and put /m/ ahead while EVA-01 kept any further /tg/ shots out of the net.

/d/'s keeper Consentacles reportedly spent the night before doing unspeakable things to its innocent supporters instead of resting for the match, but /d/'s manager refused to comment, except to say that he had faith in his captain's ability to lead the team. /d/ continued playing a highly defensive style against /int/, and it showed as neither team was truly able to gain ground on the other for the majority of the match. However, star /int/ striker Putin found holes in /d/'s defense and fired several warning shots near Consentacles' goal, eventually heading one in on a corner kick. /d/ was barely able to get a shot on goal as /int/ won 2-0 and advanced to the next round.

/sp/ dominated /k/ in their match, keeping them out of their third of the field and only letting them get one shot off for the majority of the game. /k/'s manager was absent from the post-game conference, but his spokesman left a note saying that he had plans to see the new Batman movie by himself.

/n/ stepped up against /toy/, hoping to repeat the same success they had against /co/ the day before. Unfortunately for them, Woody scored a record 4 goals in one match, breaking the back of /n/ for good.

Semi Finals

The /m//int/ match was fast and furious as both teams' high-scoring offenses met on the pitch. One of /int/'s defenders scored an own goal before the end of the first half, letting /m/ tie at intermission. The name of the /int/ defender, Yuropoor, was withheld as he feared retaliation from Putin. During the second half, Putin laughed at any suggestions that /int/ was done when /m/ was up 3-1, saying, "Those /sp/artans are not the only ones who can find a way to win." Putin single-handedly ran up /int/'s score until they won 4-3, including one goal where the /m/ defenders yelled that Putin was offsides as he streaked into the open field. The line judges refused to comment on any rumors that they ignored the offsides, and subsequently asked if their wives were still alive back home.

/sp/ and /toy/ met on the pitch for the first time in recent memory. /sp/'s Messi quickly scored a goal on the shocked /toy/ defense, but /toy/'s main scorer Woody answered 10 minutes later. Tim Teboq put the /sp/artans ahead in the 33rd minute, and the two sides were very evenly matched, with neither team gaining much ground. At the last minute of the match, /toy/'s Madoka Titus dribbled the ball the wrong way, towards her own goal, instead of attempting to set up one last chance for her team to tie before the whistle blew. No one had any explanation for this mysterious behavior.

Third Place Playoff

Both the third-place match and final were each host to an incredible blowout. In the third-place final, /m/ dominated the match as revenge for the evil Putin's trickery in the semifinals, with the Gundam RX-78-2 scoring early in the match and his comrade Alteisen following that with a hat trick in the second half. /toy/'s Woody was simply unable to capitalize on the few chances that his team created for him as /m/ steamrolled over the helpless /toy/ team.

Then the final arrived, and /int/'s star striker Putin was mysteriously tired and edgy as he stepped off of the team bus. With their team captain unresponsive and their team's manager invisible, /int/ had no idea how to counter the relentless /sp/artan offense as organized by their manager Torres McIllroy. Tony Reali scored the first goal for /sp/ very early on and Messi scored a hat trick as /sp/ finally achieved their long sought-after 4chan Cup.

Strangely, Putin did not seem angry at all at /int/'s incredible loss, but instead smiled and nodded at the proceedings. According to an /int/ spokesperson, having ordered Yuropoor's family executed just after the match ended helped to raise his spirits.
