2014 4chan Winter Cup

2014 4chan Spring Babby Cup

The 2014 4chan Winter Cup was the tenth official 4chan Cup tournament and the third iteration of the Winter Cup series. It was played from February 14 to March 2, 2014 on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with the exception of Friday, February 28, 2014. The tournament featured a mixture of teams that qualified from the 2013 4chan Autumn Babby Cup, as well as the teams who managed to qualify to the knockout phase of the 2013 4chan Summer Cup.

Seven teams made their debut at Elite competition, these being /an/, /asp/, /gd/, /gif/, /hr/, /lgbt/ and /vr/. This was also the debut Winter Cup for /c/, /cgl/, /f/, /s/ and /u/. As winner of the previous elite competition, /wg/ were the host board of this event. This was the third Cup under 4chan Cup Commissioner DrBorisG !!9Egy5BjxCDo, and the first one to be hosted with Pro Evolution Soccer 2014.

/trv/ were the winners of this competition, securing their maiden Elite cup after beating 2011 4chan Summer Cup winners /a/ in the final. /mlp/ and /h/ finished third and fourth respectively.

Thirty-two teams competed at this tournament, sixteen of the teams qualified by means of advancing to the knockout stage from the 2013 4chan Summer Cup, and sixteen qualified by means of advancing from the 2013 4chan Autumn Babby Cup, divided in 8 groups with 4 teams each, top 2 from each group are promoted to the 2014 4chan Summer Cup, and the teams finishing in the bottom two of their group will have to play in the 2014 4chan Spring Babby Cup.

The following teams replaced /fa/ and /pol/ after KHS_Rowan !!YF6PybmnSBn or Foojile !!GrsG8An7x61 were unable to provide an export for either of their teams. The teams who took their places are these two teams who didn't qualify the 2013 4chan Autumn Babby Cup, however, they were next in line and had exports:

Rules

The tournament featured two stages: the group stage followed by the knockout stage, both stages were played in PES14's exhibition mode in order to not allow motivation/heart from causing teams to snowball over time.

The group stage was played using a round-robin format, in which each team played each other team in the group once. The top two teams from each group after all matches have been played advance to the knockout stage.

The ranking of teams within groups was determined as follows:

Greatest number of points in group matches
Greatest goal difference in group matches
Greatest number of goals scored in group matches
Head-to-head results.
If any of the teams above remain level after applying the above criteria, a tiebreaker match will be played with extra-time and penalties in the result of a tied score after regulation time.

The knockout stage was played using a single elimination bracket, in which teams play each other in one-off matches with extra time and penalty shootouts used to decide the winner in the result of tied scores. It began with the round of 16 in which the winner of each group played against the runner-up of another group. This is followed by the quarter-finals, the semi-finals, the third-place match (contested by the losing semi-finalists), and the final.

Two yellow cards (issued in separate matches) or a dismissal (red card) mean that a player is suspended for his/her team's next scheduled match. Yellow cards were wiped twice:

At the end of the semi-finals

Red cards were never wiped and a player will have to serve a suspension in the next match, even if they are in the knockout stage.

Draw

The draw for the cup took place at 17:00 GMT on Saturday, February 1, 2014. Rankings determined the placement of competitors in four seeding pots, with the highest-ranked teams being placed in Pot 1, the next-highest in Pot 2 and so on until all pots were filled, the exception being /fa/ got dropped to pot 4 due to uncertainty regarding their export situation. /a/ striker Cowboy Bebop was the first player to score a goal in the competition, in his team's 1-1 draw against /cgl/ in the opening match of the tournament. The first hat-trick was scored by /trv/ striker Couchsurfer Rapist in a 4-1 win against /vr/ on the second matchday. The first and only own goal of the tournament was scored by James Vagabond of /trv/ against /h/ in the first semi final.

The winner of the Golden Boot was /a/ forward Bert is a Titan with an unmatched nine goals, scoring in all but the first and last matches of /a/'s campaign. The top assister of the Winter Cup was /trv/ forward Couchsurfer Rapist with five assists. Accelerator of /a/ won the Golden Glove with an unmatched 17 saves, making all of these in the knockout stage of the tournament having not made an appearance in the group stage.

The 2014 Winter Cup saw 198 goals at an average of 3.09 per match, the second lowest goal rate of managed tournaments, once the lowest of managed tournaments but surpassed by the 2014 4chan Summer Cup's 125 goals at 1.95 per match.
