Summary

Matchday 1

/asp/'s first major cup appearance proved that they were a team to be reckoned with, as they blew out the 4CC's most hated/most beloved team and made Ken's prediction come true. /mlp/'s scoring attempts hit trollposts and were blocked by a well-performing Black Ref, preventing their aggressive playstyle from getting any traction. The only goalhorn we heard were Ole and The Time Is Now, courtesy of American Dragon and CENAWINSLOL. Still, the match was only settled by American Dragon's amazing last-minute injury time goal. The road to the Winter Cup has become rocky for /mlp/, and /asp/ begins their potentially devastating march.

/s/'s breakout game in a major cup was a major upset, as they destroyed the mecha of former champions /m/ after MUCH MUCH RIGGING. Beautiful /m/ conditioning on the field was thrown away by poor tactics as their wing-reliant, single-player formation was utterly torn apart by /s/'s strongly supported defense. /m/'s own defensive fuck-ups gave /s/ the first goal of the game, and the momentum to continue scoring. A late-game switch to All-Out Attack by the /m/ Council could not turn the tide, and /s/ was able to score twice more. We weep for /m/'s fall, and hope that they find some way to advance next weekend.

Matchday 2

Possibly the most anticipated match of the day, /m/-/mlp/ opened with some of their rabid fanbase's favorite players caught in purple conditioning, especially /m/'s Gold RX-93 Nu Gundam. The first half saw /m/'s odd wing-reliant formation making aggressive plays and dominating the game in possession, interceptions, and shots. But a Red Jackie Chan Tulpa would (not) let them score, and the second half saw the momentum of the game shift entirely to /mlp/.

A purple RX93 Nu Gundam and a blue Mazinkaiser meant that /m/'s offense teamup was simply too tired to score, while a complete lack of midfield players meant that /mlp/s strong midfield defense could intercept and shut down /m/'s entirely wing-based defense. A nice thrugoal by >RAPE gave /mlp/ the lead at 59', and the following goals by Tracy and Alicorn Twilight cemented /m/'s blowout. Jackie Chan Tulpa earned his keep as Man of the Match, making an amazing 6 saves against /m/, while substitute goalie Iron Giant proved incapable of protecting the busted New Jersey junkyard of /m/. /m/ would go to the bottom of the group, while /mlp/ pushed themselves back into contention. We hope the /m/ council learns that they really need to learn how to PES2014 and not rely on just one formation and one offensive strategy for all their games.

Completely dominating the midfield, /asp/ managed to score two [spoiler]NOT THREE KEN, THE GAME IS OVER[/spoiler] goals in this matchup between the two leaders of the group. Despite a Purple CENAWINSLOL and a Red Butterface, /asp/ found themselves taking the lead in the first half of the game, with goals by American Dragon and Rodney Mullen. /s/ tried to make up the difference by increasing their offensive, but a wide-awake /asp/ defense saved and blocked every one of /s/' well-aimed shots. This victory made /asp/ the first team to be confirmed for the knockouts, and dropped a colony on /m/'s hopes of returning to contention in a major cup. We congratulate /asp/, an unexpected dark horse team and the only remaining 3rd-generation Elite, for proving that, yes, they are a real board with a real team. Whether their board topics are real sports is a question for another day.

Matchday 3

With /asp/ confirmed through and /m/ confirmed relegated, the only question was whether /m/ would go out without a single point to their name. Constant choking by /m/'s wing forwards had been a hallmark of the cup, and it seemed that this game would go the same way. But Shin Getter Robo, one of the /m/aligned midfielders ignored by the /m/ council's tactics, finally put /m/ on the board with a goal at 45'. A sleepy /asp/ would allow Alteisen Reese, who finally put into a workable position as a CFSS, to score /m/'s second goal. Meanwhile, whenever the unworried /asp/ offense managed to get a shot off, /m/ legacy GK Eva-01 stopped them every time. With this result, /m/ is no longer the worst giant robot in the cup, an "honor" which should go to /int/.

/mlp/ and /s/ faced off in the deciding match of Group E, with /mlp/ needing a win to overturn /s/ and advance. With The Burdened in the goal and Red and Orange strikers, /mlp/ entered the game with a strong lineup, but /s/ had a strong defense just waiting to test the magic of friendship. The Burdened and /mlp/'s chokes kept both teams on the nil-nil edge through first half, but Alicorn Twilight and Banned would trade goals early in the second to tie the game 1-1. It seemed that friendship had deserted /mlp/ and that /s/ would take their /s/exy antics to the knockouts, but >Rape finally found the strength to stop choking and score a goal at the very end of injury time to push /mlp/ into the knockouts. However well deserved (or not) their victory was, it was still too early to play Winter Wrap-Up. They should play that when they win the Cup.
