Not all 4chan boards entered the 4CC at once. Teams enter in waves called "Foundings" as new boards are created/currently-existing boards show interest in participating in the competition.

First Founding (Original Sixteen)

The Original Sixteen is the name given to the sixteen founding members of the 4chan Cup. These boards competed in the inaugural 2011 4chan Summer Cup competition.

Second Founding

The Second Founding marked the first wave of new teams to enter the 4chan Cup. Technically, the four new teams were not expansion clubs, but instead replaced teams relocated due to lack of fan support after the 2011 4chan Summer Cup. The Second Founding teams' first competition was the 2012 4chan Winter Cup. All of the "relocated" teams bar /adv/ (disqualified due to having an incomplete roster) would later be reformed for the 2012 4chan Spring Babby Cup.

Third Founding (Founding Babbies)

The Founding Babbies is the name given to the 18 teams formed after the 2012 4chan Winter Cup. The Founding Babbies were the third wave of new teams, and the largest mass founding to date. Due to the prodigious amount of new clubs, the 4chan Cup Committee introduced the Babby Cups to serve as a relegation league for the 4chan Cup. Each of these teams would compete in the 2012 4chan Spring Babby Cup alongside four other teams remade after the Second Founding, for the right to move into the Top Tier.

Fourth Founding

The Fourth Founding was the fourth mass expansion wave of the 4chan Cup, represented by the teams founded after the 2012 4chan Spring Babby Cup. These new teams brought the total number of clubs to an even 48, allowing for stable promotion and relegation between the Babbies and Elite tournaments. The Fourth Founding teams would first compete in the 2012 4chan Autumn Babby Cup.

Fifth Founding (Provisional Teams)

Provisional Teams was the name originally given to the teams of the Fifth Founding, formed after 4chan's board expansion in Spring 2013. There were eight teams hoping to gain entry into the 4chan Cup via a qualification route in Autumn 2013. Their entry was dependent on a commitment to maintain the teams until the next opportunity for qualification. All boards which expressed an interest went on to compete in the qualifiers.

On the subject of this Founding's name:

Prior to this expansion the 4chan Cup operated with 48 teams, allowing for a simple 16-up, 16-down promotion and relegation system with easily divisible 32-team tournaments. There was a reluctance among the community to allow expansion beyond 48 teams due to the potential difficulties in scheduling additional teams would present.

Following 4chan's board expansion in Spring 2013, interest among new boards was in some cases instant. Some teams were created informally a matter of days after the boards themselves. The flood of interest from these new teams prompted the decision to allow an expansion of the 4chan Cup beyond 48 teams. New teams were given a provisional entry on the basis of prolonged interest from the teams and their staff until the next suitable point of entry into the 4chan Cup.

Teams of the Fifth Founding have come to be known as provisionals for this reason.
  • Note: This Founding's entry to the 4chan Cup saw the first ever Qualifier/Fetus level competition in response to the additional qualification needed for the sheer volume of teams.

Sixth Founding

The Sixth Founding is the name currently given to teams that have expressed interest in joining the 4chan Cup between the 2014 4chan Winter Cup and the 2014 4chan Autumn Babby Cup. This was to be the first time that an official Founding group would have staggered cup debuts. However, events which occurred leading up to the Autumn Babby allowed for all four teams to debut at the same time. This was to be dependent on each teams ability to develop interest and support from their respective boards. All four Sixth Founding teams competed in the 2014 4chan Autumn Babby Cup.

Seventh Founding

The Seventh Founding is the name currently given to the teams that formed after new 4chan moderator Hiroyuki Nishimura expanded the website throughout 2015 and 2016. As of the 2016 4chan Spring Babby Cup, two teams gained entry into the 4chan Cup. These teams had to demonstrate interest within their respective boards in order to be allowed to compete in the Cup, where they went on to compete in the 2016 4chan Spring Babby Cup Qualifiers.
