Spring 2016 Rule Change Tests

Full writeup here: http://puu.sh/nRxFZ/41d7edb062.txt

Warning: A lot of puushes inside puushes.

Note:

  • The cards are not hugely important. I do think, however, that more cards, especially on medals, can improve the visual excitement of the game.
  • Keepers should be kept at the same stats as the nonmedals. Any higher and they start to save things that it feels like the shouldn't.
  • /k/ isn't horrible on good sliders, which they had for this cup.

Summary of Changes

  • Nonmedals have had their stats changed to flat 81
  • Silvers have been changed to flat 90, to stay between Gold and Nonmedal
  • Golds are unchanged
  • Keepers are 81 in all non-goalkeeping stats, with 86 in Keeper-relevant ones

Goal of the Tests

  • To reduce spaghetti by nonmedals (outfield and keepers)
  • To improve cohesion between nonmedals and medals
  • Improving passing as well as positioning
  • To make the gameplay look more intelligent
  • To maintain the Gold-Silver-Nonmedal harmony that we've seen in previous PES iterations
  • To be subtle enough changes to prevent pinballing (when the ball moves very fast from one end of the pitch to another and back, because players can pass well but not produce anything due to the defense being too good)

Results of the Tests

  • Spaghetti is reduced
  • Actual plays can be made with fewer fuckups, improved defense actually makes them work for it too
  • Nonmedals are still worse than Silvers, who are worse than Golds (In some other tests the compression was too great and the difference was negligible)
  • Pinballing is reduced, while passes are improved.
  • The ball still gets stuck in the box, albeit less often, but only a proper AI patch will fix that fully.
  • It's hard to say for sure, without having tested truly bad teams, but the good teams looked good and played well, so there's no reason to assume they would be beaten by bad teams without getting unlucky.
  • Keepers are ever so slightly too good.

Recommendations Based on the Tests

  • 83/91/99 was also tested, and looked similar gameplay-wise, so I say the smaller change should be favorable if they both achieve very similar results
  • Keepers need not be buffed individually from Nonmedals. The improvements in defense combined with flat 81 keepers should be plenty to reduce goals but not irresponsibly so.
  • Harlock still sounds more promising than this, but if Harlock were to fall through for whatever reason, I suggest we use 81/90/99 instead of 77/88/99 as a fallback plan.
