This is the history page for /vt/

Origins

The definition of a "vtuber" is fluid and changing, but the core idea was anchored in place in late 2016, when Kizuna AI made her first appearance on YouTube. A beautiful anime-styled girl (claiming herself to be an Artificial Intelligence) doing comedic and video game related content in the form of short videos. She was virtual and a YouTuber.

However, despite a short spike of popularity worldwide around her first appearance, Kizuna AI and other Vtubers like her would fall back into a niche category of entertainment; Kizuna AI would maintain her role as the Oyabun of Vtubers, while the Four Kings would follow close behind her in popularity. Meanwhile, a tiny "tech company" by the name of Cover hires an talent named Tokino Sora to be a cute idol to show off their technology; she has a few hundred subscribers and even less active viewers.

Turn the clock to Christmas 2017: a miracle occurs.

Kizuna AI and the Four Kings are unable to stream due to technical difficulties or scheduling. Thousands of fans go wondering through channels looking for something to watch; many, in the thousands, find a rather unassuming Sora streaming into the night: by the time the sun rises the next morning, Sora's subscriber count has risen exponentially and the course of Vtubing as a whole is changed forever.

Kizuna AI and the Four Kings recede in popularity as Vtuber agencies rise to popularity; Nijisanji rises to the top for a time alongside other independent channels, while, spurred by the success of Sora and their new talent Roboco, the tiny tech company Cover Corporation establishes Hololive, with their "First Generation" debuting in the middle of 2018. Hololive is still the smallest dog in the fight to the top of the rankings, but they begin their slow climb as they debut their 2nd and 3rd Generations, each with their own cast of spotlight-stealing talents.

Then some Chinese person decided to eat a undercooked bat and the whole planet shuts down. Everyone is working from home, laid off from work, and looking for something to occupy their immense amount of downtime while they're in pandemic lockdown.

Spurred by the YouTube algorithm and by newfound free-time, hundreds of thousands of people are exposed to translated clips of a lolicon talking about wearing bandaids as a bra, a shrine maiden saying nigger, and a weird fox singing Scatman John's "I'm Scatman", among other things. Worldwide popularity is suddenly on Vtubers as a whole and Hololive is at the center of it all.

By the fall of 2020, foreign fans make up a significant part of many Vtuber's audience and the tipping point comes as Hololive announces its EN branch. Now, on 4chan, /jp/ had been the turbulent home of all Vtuber discussion up until this point, but seeing the even newer influx of fans jumping onto the Vtuber ship thanks to major English-speaking talents for the first time, /jp/ descended into chaos.

It was only after a couple of months of "testing" by site management that /vt/, Virtual Youtubers, was created to house (but not contain) Vtuber discussion.

2021

2021 4chan World Cup

The team debuts in the 2021 4chan World Cup in its opening game.

How else would a debut start but with the opening match of the World Cup against the zombie robot of /soc/? And in true debut fashion, /vt/ would concede 2 goals within the first 20 minutes of the game, things looking disastrous for the new team. Goalkeeper Gosling can't seem to move quick enough, the midfield can't connect, and the strikers can't get a shot off. Then, a dead program, Skype kills Tokino Soda. And she's really ded. Replacing her with Doxxbeats, the /vt/ team seems to come alive at the injury of their true idol. Kaichou scores just before the half, and the rrat makes it 2-2 by the 50th minute. But /soc/'s Vocaroo would quickly make it 3-2 in favor of the /soc/ialites once again. And then at 86 minutes, Nenechi, with all her overwhelming power, finds a lane past a defender and blasts in one more to make it 3-3. Gosling would prove his worth in the final minutes of the game as /soc/ is awarded a free kek right at the edge of the box. Perhaps it was the red condition, maybe it was luck, maybe it was his oshi, but Gosling punched away Rate My Cock's freekick to earn /vt/ their first ever point in the group stages.

Saved by their own keeper in week 1, /vt/'s next challenge was the equally dead and robotic /gd/. However, on this day, the keeperbabby would be strong with no /vt/ but with the graphic designers, as Untitled-1.AI would catch everything coming his way, while the strong backline would support him. /vt/'s ailing defense would strike again and lead to two quick goals from Helvetica, putting the /vt/ubers down by 2 once again. Unfortunately, the managers attempts to force /gd/'s keeper to stumble backfire and, even with an ogey rrat goal, Glitch Art would make it 1-3 and then a late free kick from Helvetica would give him his first ever hattrick and a rough 1-4 loss for /vt/.

Needing two goals to continue into the knockout stages, /vt/ only managed to defeat rival team /v/ (1–0). Both sides started pressing each other's goals. /vt/ was spared with a couple of trollpost hits before finally scoring late in the first half. The team pressed on for a second goal. Some reliable goalkeeping from HEY MOONA kept /vt/ in the running, but lack luster passing in the midfield limited many opportunities. It would not have mattered anyways because /soc/ BTFO /gd/. /vt/ bows out of the 2021 World Cup with plenty to look forward to.

2021 4chan Autumn Babby Cup

The team enters into the regular cup cycle with the 2021 4chan Autumn Babby Cup.

The campaign begins against a hapless /r9k/ team. In dominating fashion, two goals were scored in the first half. By sheer luck, one goal got past Moona but the response was swift with a /vt/ goal to put the final score of 3-1.

Following the initial win, luck did not favor /vt/ against both /tv/ and /sp/. In similar fashion, the team pushed hard against /tv/. However, the attacks were denied by /tv/'s goalkeeper, Jar Jar Binks. One defensive lapse allowed the game's only goal putting /vt/ into a 0-1 loss. Early defensive blunders would cost /vt/ any points against /sp/, ending with a 3-2 loss for /vt/ at the Semen Pipeline.

For the final game, hope was lost when /sp/ defeated /r9k/. This rendered the final game against /f/ mathematically impossible to advance into the elite cup. However, /vt/ would not lie down and die for a /f/ side needing all 3 points to advance. Moving up from her usual midfield role, ogey rrat would score a hattrick as a striker, more than enough to drag /f/ with them to the shadow realm Spring Babby. /vt/ ends the Autumn campaign with two wins for six points, finishing 19th overall, one goal behind 18th, and one point behind 17th.

2022

2022 4chan Spring Babby Cup

Debut of the HiRyStadium vs /trv/.

In the 2022 4chan Spring Babby Cup, /vt/ was drawn into Group D with /trv/, /vg/, /bant/, and /vm/.

The first game against /vg/ proved to be very difficult for the team offensively, as /vg/'s defensive scheme limited /vt/'s offensive opportunities. One drive after another was stopped by /vg/'s backline. Only once was ogey rrat able to penetrate through the line and score the team's lone goal in a 2-1 loss. The second game vs /trv/ was much more productive. This time, the offense controlled the ball and dominated the game on the way to a 3-0 rout, setting a new biggest win record for the team.

In the third game against /vm/, the team won in efficient fashion scoring 4 goals on 4 shots from 4 different players. /vm/ initially applied pressure in the beginning of the game, but /vt/ turned it around netting two goals in two drives towards goal. Leftback KIARA MY DOG DIED scored early to take the team's maiden non-medal goal. The second half started similarly as the first half, with /vm/ applying pressure. This time, /vm/ was able to score from a post-shot rebounded into goal. But then, that was followed up by two more pushes towards 2 goals, including a fabulous header from ogey rrat, to cap the game 4-1. /vt/ tied their biggest win record here as well.

In /vt/'s final group stage game, nothing was certain. A previous game's result, /vm/ beating /vg/, meant that all bets were off and any of the three /v*/ teams could still mathematically advance. But with the strongest GD of the 3, /vt/ applied pressure to a so-far fumbling /bant/ and scored a Four-Medal Showing, with Nenenchi, ogey rrat, Oyabun (twice!), and The Jaw all scoring. Without much fear and the ability to grow their massive GD lead over /vg/ and /vm/, /vt/ won sent the international banterers to 5pa1n to leave their GD at +9. It would set yet another record for biggest win for /vt/.

Quietly watching from the slidelines of GRIP WEEKEND, /vt/ would be celebrate as they were confirmed into their first real Elite Cup, the 2022 4chan Summer Cup, topping their group.

The round of 16 vs /k/ was a tale of two phases. /vt/ was limited to one shot. /k/ choked possession into /vt/'s half of the field, until the first goal was scored midway in the second half. Moona was able to produces enough saves to limit /k/ to just that one goal. Then /vt/ immediately responded with a hard push towards goal. Obayun fired a shot that deflected off the keeper. Then Holofightz was there to take the rebound to level the game 1-1. /vt/ generally returned the favor and limited /k/'s access to the ball. The game went all the way to penalties, where two Moona saves enabled the team to put away 4 PK shots to win.

The run in spring ends in the quarterfinal vs /an/. /vt/ had multiple chances at goal, but the shots were denied either by goalkeeping, deflections, and missed shots. All the while, /an/'s defense was effective at disrupting /vt/'s flow. It took one mistake to turn the tide in this game, and it came from a defensive lapse from the backline. /an/'s Outdoor Cat was able to charge right down the middle from the halfway line to score. And that was the game.

/vt/ end a 4 win, 2 loss campaign in spring with 2022 summer to look forward to. The team finished 5th overall. Not too shabby.

2022 4chan Summer Cup

In the 2022 4chan Summer Cup, /vt/ was drawn into a literal Group of Death in Group F: matched with /sp/, /fit/, and /out/. Each of the three opponents have their historical merits in qualifying into the Round of 16.

The first game vs /sp/ started off as a back and forth affair with both teams taking their shots on goal. The scoreline finally broke through with an assist from Nenechi to Watamage's blooter. Then /sp/ quickly responded with a Messi to Tsuuuuuu header connection. Not to lay blame on Kiara, she did try to stop the header, but it was really nothing anyone could do about that. /vt/ continued pressure into the second half but came out empty. Pressure instead turned in /sp/'s favor for a good 10-15 game time minutes. Tight marking Messi, Pepeloni fouls him right in front of goal, injuring Messi for all of 5 seconds before he returns to the field unmarked, crossing to TSUUUUUU for another goal, ending the game at a scoreline of 2-1 in the /sp/artans' favor.

The game vs /fit/ began as an uneventful affair with both teams losing possession in the front third of the field. Otherwise, shots were missed. Then Watamage scores in the 31st minute after multiple connections and finally a quick feed from Meds right in front of the goal. However, after this goal, /fit/ controlled the ball on /vt/'s side of the field and eventually equalized. With just a few minutes left, /vt/ had a couple good chances just before the half ended. The mundane game continues to be unproductive into the second half with /fit/ generally controllihg possession. /fit/ flat out failed to capitalize on any opportunities. The tide finally changed with a fast counterattack down the middle, and Nenechi scores with the throughball from Watamage to put the game 2-1. The game ends with one more attack from Pepeloni.

The team needs at least a tie for a chance to move into the knockout stages. Against /out/, the prospects looked promising with a blitzkrieg of three goals by the 17th minute. Each time, /vt/ effectively controlled the middle of the field and went for goal. With an early 3-0 score line, the game seemed effectively over. Unfortunately, /vt/'s goal scoring ends right there. /out/ gets on the scoreboard off of a corner that failed to be cleared. For the remainder of the first half, /out/'s defending held off /vt/'s siege, as /vt/ dominated possession at 67%. Then /vt/'s misfortune continues into the second half. The pressure against /out/ continued, and an early second half chance from ogey rrat bounced off the post. In similar fashion, /out/ goes down the middle of the field and connects with Smokey to put the game 3-2 still in /vt/'s favor. After some quick back and forth ball control, /out/ got themselves in position to level the score 3-3. This became time for /vt/ to get into panik mode. Pomu makes an error putting the ball out the sideline, and /out/ finally gets ahead with /vt/'s defense slipping right in front of goal. This easily allowed the go-ahead goal through. With 20 minutes remaining, /vt/'s attacks continued to remain ineffective with two major chances shut down with offsides calls. Finally, all of /vt/'s last gasp efforts to equalize were saved by /out/'s goalkeeper.

/vt/ ends the 2022 Summer Cup with 1 win and 2 losses. All three games were by one goal difference. However, this last game with /out/ should sting with advancement in the grasp of /vt/'s hands. Instead, the next campaign in the 2022 4chan Autumn Cup awaits. At least, /vt/ came away with some team awards, whether they were wanted or not.

2022 4chan Autumn Babby Cup

Once again, /vt/ gets drawn into a Group F.

The first game against /wg/ was a tale of two: 1-1 halves. In the first possession, /vt/ was able to lay siege on /wg/'s goal and scored early in the 8th minute. After that, the rest of the half was in /wg/'s control, as /wg/'s defense was able to contain /vt/'s offense. In fact, /vt/ was limited to one shot, one goal in this half. Eventually, the game was leveled to 1-1 going into the second half. The second half was a mostly mundane game of back-and-forth with nothing to show for both sides. Then in the 70th minute, a defensive pass was bobbled, and Nenechii was able to take advantage. She lunged at the defender and stole the ball to produce a one-on-one situation with the goalie. This was an easy goal to put the game 2-1. As a repeat of the first half, the game was in /wg/'s control afterwards. The continued pressure eventually led to an equalizer scored from an open space behind the defense line.

The second game vs /tg/ concluded with another draw by the first half. After /vt/'s initial squandered pressure, /tg/ pressed in the other direction to convert the first goal of the game. Quickly, /vt/ equalized with Watamage feeding ogey rrat streaking ahead towards goal. By 12 minutes, the game was even at 1-1. The game continued back and forth from end-to-end, with decent attempts here and there. Then the siege against the /tg/ side pressed until Hag Love produced her first career goal. Looking to control the ball, /vt/ passing made an error in the midfield and gave the ball right to /tg/, which was quickly brought over for the equalizer. The second half became a scoreless affair, not even worth mentioning.

Both teams enter their last group game with a win-and-you're-in mentality with a draw favoring /t/. In spirited fashion, they have the joint anthem to Houshou Marine's AHOY. By the third minute, /vt/ gives up a fast score, with /t/ driving down a hard left flank for an easy cross and goal. Nenechi's relatiatory shot from an easy in-front-of-goal give away was deflected by an alert goalkeeper. This missed opportunity was immediately punished. The following corner kick was met with a counter attack for another goal to put the game 2-0 in favor of /t/. Then in one push after that goal, /vt/ answers straight down the middle with Nenechi putting /vt/ on the board 1-2. Both sides finally clamp down on defense forcing missed shots and blocked chances. Then /t/ breaks through with a clean shot to put the game 3-1. Just before the half, /vt/ wasn't able to punish /t/'s defensive mishap. So far, /vt/'s shots have been missing while /t/ got three goals from three shots.

Going into the second half, /vt/ must push for a win. Nenechi was able to capitalize on a gifted header pass from ogey rrat to put it away to put the score 2-3. Then on the defensive end, /vt/ gave too much room in the middle for a shot on goal to go unchallenged. The goal even deflected on a male vtuber defender. Somehow, the goal was not marked as an own goal. The score becomes 4-2. Immediately, the worthless male vtuber was subbed out. Once again, both teams continued attempts at goal with no avail. Especially for /vt/, opportunity after opportunity were stopped. Then on a cheeky drive down the middle was finished with a cheeky shot, putting the game 5-2. The game ends with both teams scoring /vt/ and /t/ 2-1 in the final 15 minutes. /vt/'s last two quick goals were scored by ogey rrat, but it was too little too late for /vt/. /t/ hammered the final nail with the last goal of the game in added time. This goal fest game ended with /t/ winning 6-4. In short TL;DR summary, /t/'s shots efficiently scored while /vt/'s barraged shots for goal. This game was marked as the biggest upset of this cup; and from what it seems, the only real upsetting thing was that /vt/ lost. /t/ was flat out the better team this day.

/vt/'s winless campaign ends with only two draws and a loss. As a consequence, the first manager TriangleMA resigns leaving the team in the hands of new management in hlggDiveGrass and Anameiguess.

2023

2023 4chan Spring Babby Cup Qualifiers

The 2023 4chan Spring Babby Cup campaign begins in the 2023 4chan Spring Babby Cup Qualifiers, as sad as it sounds. Here, /vt/ is in Group B with /his/, /wsg/, and /i/.

In a game full of shots, neither team has been able to push for goal, until /i/ finally broke through. With plenty of time to retaliate, /vt/ walks away from this game with only a yellow card. In all honesty, this game could have been much worse as two of /i/'s shots hit the post.

The second game with /his/ became a 9 goal festival with /vt/ getting the short end of the stick: 5 to 4. The game was essentially your back and forth game with relatively easy goals on both ends. One main difference includes a shot by Meds in the first half, that hit the post. In the second half, /vt/ gave up two goals in quick succession given a 1 goal lead. When /his/ gained a 2 goal lead with only a few minutes remaining, it was too little too late for /vt/ to even equalize. Overall, the effort on the /vt/ side was very good offensively but not enough. However, the defensive end leaves much to be desired.

After losing the first two games, /vt/ needs a win against /wsg/ and some help. Early on, there was plenty of pressure early but for naught. Instead, the team gives up a first half goal on a counter attack. So /vt/ spends the rest of the game trying to equalize while keeping the 1 goal deficit. The /vt/ goal finally came on a pity 90+0' own goal as time runs out on the game. /wsg/'s defense proved to be too much. Any hope of qualifying into Spring was gone as the draw was not enough.

Just like that, /vt/'s campaign ended in this year's Spring Babby Cup before it even started. The team will have a long spring and summer to look forward to the Autumn Cup.

2023 4chan Autumn Babby Cup

After hitting rock bottom and being aborted from the Spring Fetus, there was nowhere to go but up. The management and fanbase agreed the squad just wasn’t working. The team needed new memes and new energy. The prayers of the /vt/ faithful were answered, as 2 rookie players were selected as medals: Lia from Phase Connect and heart heart heart. In addition to the new medals, a new starting keeper was named: GET ME PREGNANT. Some people wondered if these new players would make a difference, and it didn’t take long to find out.

In /vt/’s opening game of the 2023 Autumn Babby, a debuting Lia from Phase Connect scored a goal, an assist and was named Man of the Match in a 3-1 win vs. eventual 3rd place trophy winners /ck/. In the next game, new keeper GET ME PREGNANT was impressive and got her first clean sheet in a 1-0 victory vs. /vmg/. In game 3, Nenechi was super charged and scored a hattrick in a 4-4 draw vs. /an/ as /vt/ won their group and secured a spot in their first ever Winter Cup. In the Round of 16, Lia from Phase Connect opened scoring at 20 minutes in, but it would be the only goal of the day for /vt/ as they lost 2-1 to the eventual Cup winners /sci/.

The fans were so happy with the performance of the team, that they unanimously wanted the same team brought back for Winter. Simply put: they wanted to run it back.

2024

2024 4chan Winter Cup

The 2024 Winter Cup wasn’t going to be easy, as /vt/ drew into what many considered the group of death along with /pw/, /mlp/ and /tv/. Things started off shaky in game 1, as /vt/ lost 3-1 to eventual Cup winners /pw/. To add insult to injury, /pw/’s game winning goal was scored by Jannetty, who was represented on the pitch by Pomu Rainpuff because the game took place on the day of her graduation.

The next game was a first-ever match-up vs. /mlp/ in what was dubbed by many as the Cancer Bowl. The ponies scored early, but /vt/ fought back as ogey rrat and Nenechi both scored goals to secure the 2-1 win for /vt/ and keeping the team alive heading into GRIP WEEKEND.

In Game 3, the conditions for advancing were difficult: not only did /vt/ have to beat an undefeated /tv/, but they had to win by at least 2 goals. Many didn’t give them any chance, but the team passed the test as all 4 medals scored goals as /vt/ cruised to a 4-1 win! For the first time ever, /vt/ stayed elite and were heading to the Winter knockouts!

In the Round of 16, the team went up against /i/. It only took 5 minutes for ogey rrat to score, and then score again by finishing a header from a Lia from Phase Connect cross. After 90 minutes, it was 2-2 and extra time was needed. Unfortunately, /vt/ just ran out of juice and conceded 2 quick goals to SS GF and /i/rene, thus ending /vt/’s run. However, the team had a lot to be proud of. In only about 8 months time, /vt/ went from being aborted to being promoted and staying promoted in the Elites for the first time ever!
