The 2012 4chan Winter Cup was the second official 4chan Cup tournament and the inaugural Winter edition. It lasted for three days, from January 5 (starting at 17:00 EST / 22:00 GMT) until January 8, 2012. After winning the previous top-tier competition, /a/ hosted this cup and entered as first-ranked seed.
This tournament was the first appearance for the teams of the Second Founding, with newcomers /tg/, /co/, /jp/, and /o/ replacing /s/, /int/, /adv/, and /soc/ respectively.
Similar to the 2011 Summer Cup, this tournament would use the double-elimination bracket format, and this would be its final rendition. In this system, all teams began in the Winner's Bracket. A loss would drop them down into a spot in the Loser's Bracket, determined by how far they advanced in the Winner's Bracket. If a team loses in the Loser's Bracket, they are eliminated from the tournament.
Also for the last time, each team chose three gold-standard players who received 99 in each stat with all other players getting 66. This is the last tournament featuring this system, following a rehash by GermanBro.
/k/ won their first tournament after defeating /sp/ in the second final. /ck/ claimed third place while /fit/ came fourth. The Golden Boot was won by /sp/'s MESSIMESSI with an unmatched ten goals.

Preliminary round
This was a seeding competition that took place in the week before the Winter Cup, to decide which teams the new entrants would face. The teams that took part were /jp/, /o/, /co/ and /tg/. The competition is famous for the mesmerizing 5-5 AET final match between /co/ and /tg/ in which /co/ won on penalties; widely considered to be one of the greatest 4chan matches in history.
