Boris Ross Art Hour FAQ:

What are we doing?

Learning to draw by freehanding pictures I grabbed from /cgl/ Cgl icon.png or wherever. I'm not going to get it right, and you're encouraged to join me! I'm sure a person or two with actual artistic talent will join in and tell us what we're doing wrong, but this is more about just trying to draw what we see and have fun with it.

What are we not doing?

Tracing - the point of this exercise is to look and try to judge where the lines should be ourselves. The results will necessarily be different from the source picture (and probably a lot worse given my skill level.)

Being assholes about it - I know I'm bad at this, the whole point is to learn. If you're good at drawing and I'm frowning saying "this is wrong and I don't know why" by all means, let me know what I'm messing up. If you just want to tell somebody their art is shit, go to /ic/ Ic icon.png

What do I need?

you don't need anything per se, you're welcome to just watch. If you want to join in though:

I'm doing this with Paint Tool SAI and an ancient Wacom tablet. I have a cheap drugstore ruler too, though that's only used for long straight lines on background elements if I need a reference. Most of this will be freehand. If you have similar gear... you're probably already a better artist than I am, feel free to redline where I'm getting it wrong.

If you ARE as bad as I am, grab a piece of printer paper and a pencil. I recommend those mechanical Bic ones you can get like 10 of in a pack from any grocery or department store for starters, but honestly whatever you have. If all you've got is yellow #2s and notebook paper, fine. Can't scan the end result? Snap a picture with your phone. Quality isn't the point here, just participation and learning.

What's an ideal picture to use for this?

One or two people in relatively simple clothes/costumes standing or sitting in some kind of dynamic pose. Straight up is fine, but we'll probably learn more if they're in varying positions. They also can't be too lewd, or we'd probably be pushing the Twitch terms of service. If you see a picture of a cosplayer you like on another site, by all means puush it and suggest it, since I'm usually asking the public for one at the start of a session.

How often are we doing this?

Basically daily, as this is for my learning purposes and what else am I doing right now really. I'm running these at the normal 1700 gmt cup time unless there's a cup on, in which case I'll probably run them as post-stream comfy. I may sometimes miss a day or do them later in the day, but the most warning you'll probably get is a line or two in IRC.

Can I add something to this wiki page?

Yeah but do it between the lines please:

For those interested in a free (as in free speech) digital painting application to paint along, I recommend Krita, which is available for Linux, MacOSX and Windows. --[REDACTED] 12:01, 15 April 2015 (UTC)
