Old departures and new arrivals: The 2024 4chan Winter Cup<br> | |||
The 2024 4chan Winter Cup was a disaster for /sp/. Taking 4 points in the first 2 matches and the final match being against a candidate for the wooden spoon, advancement was looking likely. Things looked even better for /sp/ as an /i/ win against /trv/ would guarantee promotion. The drawfags were holding on to a narrow 4-3 victory into the final minutes, when disaster struck: an own goal from Taking Requests in the added time gave /trv/ the one point they needed to stay alive. All /sp/ had to do was not slip against /vg/; a draw would be enough. In a true PES slurpfest, /vg/ took the win in an extremely boring 1-0 game. /sp/ were relegated to the babbies. | |||
<br> | |||
This defeat prompted the resignation of long-term managers TWAIN and JohnnyBravo, who followed Falco, who left the year before, out the door. CollieSis was left holding the reins, and for the first time in a long while, /sp/ were left with a single manager. To generate more enthusiasm and maybe bring in some new blood, an attempt to hold a /sp/erb Owl for the first time in 3 years was done in the autumn in of 2023. The Owl received a meagre number of signups and the tournament was not held. | |||
<br> | |||
New enthusiasm was however generated with The Decision 3, a tournament held specifically to look for new managers. With some new and some old, The Decision 3 went ahead on March 22nd with 8 teams; 7 with managers, and 1 autopilot as one manager had disappeared. The tournament turned out to be an absolute meme as /sp/, an autopilot team made by former manager JohnnyBravo, won the tournament undefeated. Desperately trying to salvage something from this embarrassment, newfag gimi and former /sci/ manager AitorKaranka signed up to co-manage along CollieSis. | |||
<br> | |||
So, it happened again: The 2024 4chan Spring Babby Cup<br> | |||
The new management had their first outing just a few weeks later in the 2024 4chan Spring Babby Cup. /sp/ were drawn into Group E with /h/, /tg/ and /pol/. The group stage went brilliantly for the /sp/artans, winning every match 4-2 and securing promotion to the Elite Cup already in the second round of matches. For the knockout stage /sp/ received a favorable draw by meeting /r9k/ in the Round of 16. Two early goals from TSUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU and a goal from We European gave /sp/ a comfortable 3-0 victory, and /vp/ waited in the quarterfinals. Historically /sp/ have a terrible record against the Pokemon trainers, amassing only one win to their five. After a chaotic match that ended 8-8 after extra time, /sp/ avenged their 2022 Summer Cup Ro16 loss by winning the penalty shootout 4-3. On several occasions during play /sp/ were down by two goals, and even missed their first two penalties. | |||
<br> | |||
What awaited /sp/ in the semi-finals was probably the only thing gayer than watching 22 men run around and push each other; /y/. /sp/ had a nervy start and conceded early, but 2nd half tactical changes paid off and earned /sp/ a 5-3 victory. On the other side of the final were /mlp/. Despite /mlp/ and /sp/ being two of the most disliked teams in the cup, they had only ever met once before, which ended in a 3-4 loss for /sp/. Interestingly this meeting was also on PES 16. The final started in the worst possible way it could have, with /mlp/ scoring straight from kick-off. It soon got even worse as George Costanza, who had been solid as a rock all cup and even secured extra time against /vp/ with his 7-7 equalizing goal at '88, lost the ball to rape in /sp/'s box and /mlp/'s top scorer made no mistakes from close range. Getting two goals early suited /mlp/'s slow possession approach perfectly and /sp/ looked lethargic going into half-time. /sp/'s tactical changes started working in the 2nd half and THIS DOES NOT FOOKIN SLIP scored a header at '58, giving /sp/ a glimmer of hope. It unfortunately wasn't to be; /mlp/ continued to draw out the game and /sp/'s BALON A TSUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU tactic failed for the very first time. Despite the final loss this was /sp/'s best finish at a Babby Cup, beating 3rd place from Spring 2020. | |||
<br> | |||
Although this cup ultimately ended in disappointment, things are looking promising for /sp/. TSUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU earned the Golden Boot, and smashed the record for most goals scored in a cup by a player (17, previously 14.) This achievement is even more impressive considering the 2nd placers in the Golden Boot race only scored 11 goals, TSUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU beating them by six goals. He also earned the most Man of the Match awards with 5. Messi looked in doubt to continue his streak of scoring in every cup, but out those doubts to rest by scoring all 3 of his goals in the 8-8 draw vs /vp/. This 8-8 was also the highest scoring draw in the history of the cup. | |||
A New Hope: The 2024 4chan Summer Cup<br> | |||
There were high hopes for /sp/ when the 2024 4chan Summer Cup kicked off the 19th of July. /sp/ played their first game the day after, vs /sci/. Within the first 50 minutes /sci/ had taken a 3 goal lead. TSUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU scrambled to bring some hope back to /sp/, reducing the deficit to just one goal the more aggressive tactics from /sp/ left them vulnerable on the counter and /sci/ countered in 2 goals to give them a 5-2 win toward the end. The group stage started with the worst possible scenario with /sp/ basically needing two wins from the next two games to advance; and even then, it might not be enough. A /sci/ loss to /toy/ meant a 6-6-6-0 group was possible. /sp/ would need to recover from a -3 goal difference to move on. In their next game, against /x/, the Spartans made no mistakes and echoed the 2024 Spring Babby Cup group stage by grabbing a 4-2 win against the spooky ghosts. HE'S COMING HOME scored in injury time to give /sp/ a desperately needed goal to help with goal difference, and as his goal music Three Lions '98 rang out over the stream, it truly felt, if only for a moment, like it was coming home. /sp/ would now only need to beat /toy/ by 2 goals to guarantee advancement, though a favorable result in the /x/ - /sci/ game could also see the Spartans through with only a 1 goal win or even a draw. Although /toy/ were an autopilot this cup, they had so far beaten /x/ AND /sci/, and only a 2 goal win would put /sp/ above the Lego pieces. With advancement on the line, the Spartans truly sent it, sending /toy/ to Spain in a 5-1 win with 5 different goal scorers, also ensuring Messi kept his streak of scoring in every cup he's participated in. Not only was this more than enough to advance over /toy/, /sci/ could only beat /x/ by 1 goal, which put /sp/ and /sci/ on equal goal difference, with /sp/ going through as group winners by virtue of goals scored. After a disastrous first game, /sp/ had pulled a great comeback to top the group. | |||
For the knockout stage, /sp/ pulled a former 2024 Spring Babby Cup opponent in /tg/. So far this cup cycle, /sp/ and /mlp/ were the only two teams to tame this fearsome autopilot, who went unbeaten in the group stage with their main striker Doomrider scoring 11 goals. This was not just a match for advancement, but also to protect TSUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU's newly acquired goalscoring record from this cocaine-driven goal machine. Despite Doomrider rolling red condition on matchday, he was completely silenced as /sp/'s possession play almost completely nullified /tg/ to win a 2nd game in a row 5-1. Being drawn against an autopilot is considered an advantage in the 4CC, and /sp/ also avoided the PES16 heavy hitters in /u/ and /mlp/ in their side of the bracket, getting what was considered the favorable side. [wsg] were waiting in the quarter finals, having just beaten /aco/ 4-3. | |||
The quarter final could not have started worse, much like the Babby Cup final vs /mlp/. Immediately red condition goalkeeper EXPOSED decided that, instead of catching a poor shot straight at him, he would rather sperg out and deflect it into goal. Not long after, [wsg]'s gold player Gondola decided to pull a Haaland and with his heel higher up than Ngubu's head, heel tricked a goal from a corner before 20 minutes had passed. To add insult to injury, [wsg]'s striker and eventual Golden Boot winner Ricardo scored a beautiful free kick after 40 minutes. In 40 minutes [wsg] had scored of a keeper error, a corner kick, and a free kick. /sp/'s managers were bewildered at this unlucky start, and changes eventually improves /sp/'s play with my reffies :) bringing a goal back at 68 minutes. The dream of a comeback was shortlived as the ball bounced [wsg]'s way after a duel letting You Should Kill Yourself... Now! score an easy goal to make it 4-1. /sp/ continued pushing and created good chances but [wsg]'s keeper denied them again and again, and while TSUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU scored at 90+1, it was too late. It was not coming home this time either. The 11 years of hurt would soon turn to 12. [wsg] went on to win the cup beating /u/ in the final in a thrilling match that ended in extra time. This made the 9th time /sp/ had lost in knockouts to the eventual winner of a cup. | |||
With a little luck, it might have finally come in the 2024 4chan Summer Cup. Another disappointment does not however take away from the fact that /sp/ made a strong recovery after 2 managers retired after being relegated from the 2024 4chan Winter Cup. Now, we await the arrival of Winter for another chance at bringing it home and making it no more years of hurt. | |||

- /sp/ will play next in the 2025 4chan Winter Cup, starting (most likely) in January.
The /sp/artans Football Club is a simulated professional football team founded in August 2011, representing /sp/, the 4chan board dedicated to sports. They won the 2012 4chan Summer Cup before the title was revoked due to the Dragongate scandal. They also won the 2013 4chan Winter Cup, making them, for a time, the first and only two-time Elite competition champions. They also held the number 1 spot in the cup rankings from January 2012 to May 2013, currently the longest such reign, and from March to May, 2017.
The club's popularity among the proud posters of /sp/ has made them susceptible to negative press. Accusations of rigging lead to the Match Fixing Scandal in early January 2012. The team was implicated in the Dragongate scandal as well. Their almost-systematic shitposting on other boards during /sp/ Cup participation is often cited as one of the possible reasons for the global cup ban by 4chan moderation.
/sp/'s main rivals are, without a doubt, /a/, who knocked them out of the cup twice on top of being dirty weeaboos, but they also have minor rivalries with /v/, /fit/, and potentially any board who knocks them out of the cup (/s4s/ and /vg/ we're looking at you) or have a fanbase as rambunctious as theirs.

So, it happened again: The 2024 4chan Spring Babby Cup
It soon got even worse as George Costanza, who had been solid as a rock all cup and even secured extra time against /vp/ with his 7-7 equalizing goal at '88, lost the ball to >rape in /sp/'s box and /mlp/'s top scorer made no mistakes from close range.
A New Hope: The 2024 4chan Summer Cup
Tactics & Aesthetics
Colors and Mascot
/sp/ is maroon, orange, black and white.
Maroon: R173 G17 B12
Orange: R200 G85 B5
For the first 4chan World Cup, /sp/ wore an all white kit with a simplistic green logo. Before the 2012 Winter Cup the team wore blue but eventually settled on the current iconic maroon and orange home kit, based on real world Italian divegrass team AS Roma. For away matches, /sp/ wears solid black kit with orange details. To continue the theme that the club's number one goalkeeper is DA BEARS, the uniform for the goalkeeper is a near representation of the uniform of the handegg team, the Chicago Bears.
The mascot of the club is Paul the Goat (named after the legendary Paul the Octopus), who has gained worldwide fame for his alleged psychic powers. When presented with two boxes containing goat food decorated with the club crest of the two teams who are about to play in a game, Paul has successfully picked the winning team 100% of the time from 25 attempts.
Two logos have been used to represent /sp/ Football Club. While one is the official logo and the other pointless, both are alright to use when depicting the /sp/ Club.
Image | Description |
---|---|
The famous logo of /sp/ Fooball Club and currently the most widely used, it depicts Paul the Goat standing proud on an image of a Spartan soldier. The nickname of the club is the /sp/artans, which is the reason for the Spartan on the logo. The star under the Spartan is a representation of /sp/'s first cup victory in the 4chan summer cup. Football came home that night. | |
The lesser used logo. Paul the Goat is given orange colored horns and a shawl with the /sp/ name on it. While a lesser used logo, it is quite a classic among die-hard fans of the club. |
Supporters
/sp/ is known to have some of the most passionate fans in the game. Due to this passion, /sp/artans are often seen as whiners by other boards, especially in the wake of the 2012 SC Bracket Scandal. Due to this, /sp/ was the winner of the Worst Fans Award in that cup. However, /sp/ does boast some of the most supportive fans in all of 4chan, participating in the most watched game of the 2012 4chan Summer Cup. After claiming victory in this cup, /sp/ was flooded with celebratory "MESSIMESSIMESSI" and "THANK YOU BASED TORRES" posts.

Rivalries
The Derby of /sp/art/a/ The biggest derby in the game of virtual divegrass–El Classico. A battle between GOATs of /sp/orts and Men of /a/nime to see who are the greater champions. This derby's history runs all the way back to the 2011 4chan Summer Cup semifinals–a moment /a/ refers to as Yamakan saving Anime and /sp/ remembers as BasedChoke. They did not meet again in an official match until the 2013 Spring Babby Cup friendlies, which /sp/ won. They met twice more in Official Cup games for the 2014 4chan Winter Cup round of 16 and 2015 4chan Spring Babby Cup group stage, with /a/ winning both. The two teams who were destined to be together forever finally met again after 8 years in the 2023 4chan Spring Babby Cup, resulting in a thrilling (yes, actually) 0-0 draw that just barely brought /a/ to their first Elite in 5 years alongside /sp/. 2024 started as a cursed year for /sp/ as the /sp/artans were relegated to the Babbies, while the degenerate weebs stayed Elite. |
1-1-3 |
The Not-Sports Derby Whenever there was a WWE thread on /sp/, there was always at least one person who told WWE fans that pro wrestling is fake and that it belongs on /asp/. Eventually, /sp/ managed to get wrestling threads officially kicked off the board with the help of Hiroyuki Nishimura, who succeeded m00t as owner of 4chan in 2015, stoking the rivalry ever hotter. In the 4chan Cup, these teams have completely different mentalities, with /sp/ angrily sacking managers if they don't win cups and /asp/ exercising more patience with their managers. The two teams finally met in an official Cup match during the 2017 4chan Winter Cup quarterfinals, which /sp/ won 3-1. The rivalry was put to rest after /asp/ was split into /pw/ and /xs/. Rest in peace, /asp/. |
2-0-0 |
The e-Sports Derby /sp/ and /v/ are intense rivals in a feud that is essentially the alphas vs. the weeaboo gaming nerds, and this rivalry was only made worse after /sp/ sent /v/ to the Loser's Bracket in 2011. /v/ is also jealous of /sp/'s endless creativity, epic maymays and their ability to handle the banter. Despite this, /v/ took control of this rivalry for years, defeating the GOATs in the 2013 4chan Summer Cup round of 16 and twice in the 2016 4chan Spring Babby Cup–in the group stage and quarterfinals. This streak was broken in the 2017 4chan Winter Cup when /sp/ eliminated /v/ in the round of 16. /sp/ leveled the series in the 2017 4chan Autumn Babby Cup with a 1-0 win over /v/ in the group stage and took the lead after beating them 2-1 in the group stage of 2020 4chan Spring Babby Cup. The rivalry continued to be close as /v/ beat /sp/ 5-2 in the 2023 4chan Winter Cup, where /sp/ got relegated. /sp/ took their revenge in the 2023 4chan Summer Cup, winning 3-1 in a tournament that saw /v/ relegated. |

Trivia
- Of the 17 teams to win a 4chan Cup elite tournament, /sp/ is the only one to win every match on their way to the title.
- Closest calls: /a/ won 2011 Summer 8-0-1 when it was a double-elimination tournament. Under the two-stage format, /wg/ (2013 Summer), /trv/ (2014 Winter), /tg/ (2015 Winter), /mlp/ (2015 Summer) and /pol/ (2020 Winter) all won with 6-1-0 records.
- /sp/ became the first board to have a sticky thread for a 4chan Cup event during the 2012 Winter Cup, a feat that remained unique to the board until /s4s/ had their own sticky for the 2017 Summer Cup.
