Team History
/vg/ League 3
/ssbg/ started their /vg/ League career in August 2014. Founded by Boss Rigger !aKSX6MhrLY and managed by CanadaFag !!UBP3WKf+VPY.
The team was matched up in Group C with /acg/, /rs07g/, and /rsg/. In their first match against /rsg/, /ssbg/ took their first official victory 3-1 and made an opening day statement about their position in Group C. However their next game put them into a questionable position after a 1-1 draw against fellow newcomer /rs07g/, a tie that gave /rs07g/ a chance to overtake /ssbg/ to advance to the knockouts depending on the final two games of Group C. Looking now to be fighting for a spot in the elimination rounds /ssbg/ had a breather as /rsg/ took their final game over /rs07g/, effectively securing /ssbg/s spot in the eliminations, and now look to take 1st place over /acg/. In the end /ssbg/ came back from 2 goals down, but had to settle for a 3-3 draw with /acg/.
In the knockouts, /ssbg/ went on to beat /csgog/ 2-1 thanks to a strong overall match but their blazing first /vg/ league flamed out against /wtg//, where they lost 3-1 to the eventual finalists.
/vg/ League 4
/ssbg/ started their second campaign in the /vg/ League landing on group E alongside /hsg/, /kspg/, and /civ4xg/. The skill of the team was put into question after a sleepy first match that ended 1-1 with a last minute goal from Fox Only. Many wondered if /ssbg/ just lucked out in their first tournament. All these doubts were put to rest on the 2nd group match where /ssbg/ showed their moves and got a dominating victory 1-6 against /civ4xg/ with goals from Falcon Punch, Fox Only, Final Destination, and the team captain SAKURAAAAAAI. Finally on the last day of the group stage /ssbg/ took /kspg/ to final destination and emerged victorious 2-1 ensuring their ticket to the knockouts for the second tournament in a row.
On the knockout stage /ssbg/ found themselves facing against /dng/ one of the few teams that had proved themselves after winning /vg/ League 2. /ssbg/ managed an early lead and added a 2nd goal early in the second half. It all looked great until on the dying minutes of the match /dng/ activated their trap card and tied the game. Forced to go through extra time neither team was able to find another goal. In the end it all came down to a penalty shootout where sadly Fox Only missed early on, and it all came down to "It's a fighting game" to keep the team alive. Unfortunately Smash Bros proved to be a party game as he missed his kick and sent /ssbg/ back and allowed /dng/ through where they eventually found themselves winning /vg/ League 4.
/vg/ League 5
/ssbg/ started their third campaign in the /vg/ League landing on group E AGAIN alongside /aa2g/, /nintyg/, and /ffg/. It all started going off the rails on the very first match where /ssbg/ earned a hard fought victory against /aa2g/ 5-4 in what was voted the match of the tournament. While the offense looked really capable, the team's defense left many worried after the team ended with >0 (ZERO) saves from the goalkeeper. What followed was a shamefur dispray loss 0-1 to /nintyg/ in a sleeper of a match. On the final day of the group stage /ssbg/ found a draw 1-1 against the eventual /vg/ League 5 winner /ffg/. This proved to be the only match that /ffg/ didn't win in the entirety of VGL4.
Although the team barely managed to qualify to the knockout round. The team got a surge of motivation thanks to the announcement of the Smash Ballot winner happening just a couple of days before matchday. To celebrate the occasion the team used Bayonetta's music as their anthem in the match against /nepgen/. A match to proved to be /ssbg/'s finest hour. After conceding 2 goals in the first half without being able to get any chances of their own. /ssbg/ put everything on the line for the second half. All hope seemed lost when suddenly at the 89th minute ">project meme" scored a beautiful goal from a corner kick. /ssbg/ stole the ball right after kickoff and rushed towards /nepgen/'s goal and fox only scored mere seconds later sending both teams to overtime. Both teams found another goal on the first half of extra time, and goalkeeper 2Bigley found redemption by keeping the team alive during the second half of extra time. /ssbg/ had to go through a penalty shootout in their first match of knockouts again, but luckily this wasn't a repeat of last time. After "Mages" missed for /nepgen/ it all came down to 1 player with a big heart to put an end to the match and a victory for smash, 2Bigley scored the final kick and sent /ssbg/ to the Quarter finals.
In Quarter-finals /ssbg/ faced against /rlg/, but sadly this turned out to be a bad matchup for the team. Ultimately the match ended 1-4 in favor of /rlg/ ending VGL5 in a bittersweet note for /ssbg/.
This proved to be the last stock for /ssbg/. Interest form the general dwindled and eventually both the general and the team were put to rest marking the end of an era...
... or is it?
/vg/ League 11
Riding the Ultimate hype train, /ssbg/ came back just in time for the 11th /vg/ League, stopping at Group E YET AGAIN where /fgog/, /ksg/, and /dbg/ awaited. Unfortunately, just three minutes into the return, /ssbg/ gave up a goal, to /fgog/'s STELLAAAAAA, who was immediately subbed off. SAKURAAAAAAI scored an equalizer before the end of the first half, but the match stalled out to a 1-1 draw despite two fairly capable attacks. Against /ksg/, /ssbg/ conceded even earlier, but Bigley responded almost as quickly. Unfortunately, /ssbg/ played the whole match from behind, losing a high-scoring 3-2 match to the cockroaches of /vg/. Heading into the final day of group stage, /ssbg/ needed a win to advance, though their path was made harder when /fgog/ defeated /ksg/ 2-1 the match before, putting /ksg/ in a position where they could easily advance anyway with a /ssbg/ win. Fortunately, it looked like things would go /ssbg/'s way when they kept a 1-0 lead against /dbg/ at halftime thanks to Bigley. Of course, /dbg/ came roaring back very quickly in the second half thanks to mid-cup replacement gold Gogeta, but SAKURAAAAAAI added two of his own and /ssbg/ got back to a 3-2 lead. Which they held for six minutes. They ultimately lost 4-3, failing to advance from the group stage for the first time and doing so without a win. /dbg/ and /fgog/ eventually played in the final, Gogeta became a /vg/ legend, and all /ssbg/ could do was watch from the bottom.
/vg/ League 12
/ssbg/ came back for the next /vg/ League undeterred by their first failure, now in Group K with /ffg/, /domg/, and /vn/. In the opening match, a runback of /ssbg/ denying /ffg/ a perfect championship run, /ssbg/ once again got the better of /ffg/ and actually won this time to boot, 1-0 by way of SAKURAAAAAAI. Against /domg/, nonmedal HE'S IN, powered up by two recent announcements of new playable characters, scored a goal and assisted the other as /ssbg/ took an easy 2-0 victory over the future goalless wooden spoon. Though /ssbg/ had taken six points from their first two matches and done so without conceding a single goal, they were still not in the clear, as a loss to /vn/ and a /ffg/ win could easily derail their return to prominence. /ffg/ did their part, winning an incredibly boring affair with /domg/ 1-0, and despite /ssbg/ dominating their match with /vn/, it looked as though they would lose once /vn/ scored at the 53rd minute. Fortunately, a stoppage-time Bigley goal meant the match finished 1-1, keeping /ssbg/ top of the group and guaranteeing them a return to the Round of 16. Despite /ssbg/ finally getting the truly good defending they had long asked for, they had perhaps unjustly not scored enough goals to prevent themselves from being at the mercy of the Round of 16 draw, and the hat gave them /mbg/ in the Round of 16. Newly-minted bronze DORIYAH scored six minutes in and /ssbg/ largely controlled a match that ended in a 4-2 victory for them. With the attack getting up to speed quickly, it felt as though /ssbg/ could make a run for the cup and perhaps get revenge on the now defending champion /dbg/, the team that eliminated them from the last /vg/ League. Once /ssbg/ were up 3-1 against the very threatening /twg/ in the first half, that seemed like a genuine possibility. And then, spaghetti struck the entire /ssbg/ defense. The halftime score was 3-2, and just ten minutes into the second half, it was 4-3 for /twg/. That is where it ended, and despite going toe-to-toe with the best competition they had seen, /ssbg/ couldn't get the job done. /dbg/ thrashed /twg/ afterwards and won their second in a row, further cementing the legendary status of their gold who had got his start eliminating /ssbg/.
/vg/ League 13
/ssbg/ returned after their impressive outing and got into Group H, which on the surface, could not possibly have looked any easier for them, with relatively new shitters /ddlc/, a runback against /vn/, and the return of /utg/ after a hiatus from fake divegrass that saw Undertale meme its way into Smash. Seemingly proving the shitter status of /ddlc/ was well-earned, SAKURAAAAAAI gave /ssbg/ a three-minute lead, but by halftime it was gone, turned into a 2-2 draw after /ddlc/ took a 2-1 lead. /ddlc/ made it 3-2 in the second half, and only SAKURAAAAAAI getting a hat trick could prevent an embarrassing loss. A 3-3 draw wasn't much better, though. In the rematch against /vn/, SAKURAAAAAAI gave /ssbg/ a first-half lead before momentum completely turned and a 2-1 victory for /vn/ coupled with two /utg/ wins meant all /ssbg/ could hope for was a Survival Round place. And they needed help to even have a chance at that, which came in the worst possible way, a 0-0 draw between /vn/ and /ddlc/ despite the latter failing to get a single shot. /ssbg/ had an unreal opportunity, and looked like they could capitalize on it when Bigley scored in the seventh minute. Unfortunately, it was just a repeat of the /vn/ match, and /utg/ even added a third to make it worse. /ssbg/ bottomed the group, again, and there was some possibility that they would not play again. Little did anyone know what would eventually come.
/vg/ League 14
/ssbg/ came back after their most embarrassing performance looking to at the very least not repeat it again, and their group looked very favorable, as they got quarterfinalist /mbg/ but also got autopilots /ddlc/ and /ink/ in Group B. First up was a NintenDerby against /ink/, and /ssbg/ very quickly got to a 2-0 lead to kick off their time in the 14th /vg/ League thanks to SAKURAAAAAAI and Bigley. However, with the notorious momentum shifting of the game the tournament was played on, this derby was 2-2 at halftime. Thankfully, DORIYAH scored not long into the second half and Bigley made sure of a 4-2 victory to start the group stage. /mbg/ were up next, and they were the ones with the early goal, but a SAKURAAAAAAI brace made it 2-1 for /ssbg/ at halftime. /mbg/'s nonmedal striker hero F1 F3 equalized the match at the 67th minute before a corner play saw a miraculous blooter from the one and only Hoes Mad to give /ssbg/ back the lead. F1 F3 tried to again even up the match right near the end, but a fortunate miss kept it a 3-2 /ssbg/ victory and put them back in the same place they were in two /vg/ Leagues ago. Thankfully, the runback against /ddlc/ saw Snake score the obligatory early goal and the match was 3-1 almost immediately after a /ddlc/ equalizer. A consolation goal for /ddlc/ made it 3-2, but /ssbg/ were top of the group with a perfect group stage and back in the Round of 16.
Once there, their first opponent was a /tf2g/ fresh out of the Survival Round and having just lost their best player, gold medal Pottis, to a suspension. It seemed like an easy enough win, but /ssbg/ struggled to even keep /tf2g/ from scoring, and a miracle clearance of a sure (and rare) King K. Rool goal meant it stayed 0-0 and went to benuldies. Luckily, /ssbg/ made all of theirs, /tf2g/ missed both their first two, and just like that /ssbg/ were on to the final day after a surprisingly difficult match. Next up was a very defensive /egg/, and after /egg/ scored first, it felt like /ssbg/'s run was over. Then Bigley took advantage of spaghetti to equalize before the half, /ssbg/ scored twice in the second half, and a 3-1 victory put /ssbg/ into the semifinals for the first time ever. It was already the best they'd ever done, and the reward was playing defending champion /lzg/ while they were getting into peak form to successfully defend the championship. Such dreams were smashed after what was essentially a repeat of the /ink/ match; two early /ssbg/ goals, two from their opponent, and two from /ssbg/ in succession. After a 4-2 win, /ssbg/ were in the final, and awaiting them was a team that had given them their first loss all the way back in the their debut /vg/ League, /wtg/, now looking for total perfection. It looked like /wtg/ would do it again after they got out to a 2-0 lead and scored a third that was ultimately called offside, but /ssbg/ proved resilient yet again as King K. Rool finally scored a goal to end the first half before SAKURAAAAAAI, Bigley, and the linesmen (again) backed him up in the second half. Just like that, it was a 3-2 /ssbg/ win. After five and a half years, two and a half of which were spent not even fielding a team, /ssbg/ were the champions off the back of a strong-for-the-environment defense and timely enough attacking while records were being broken or nearly broken by other teams. The only thing that prevented it from being a truly perfect run was the shootout against /tf2g/, but even the feat of seven wins in seven matches, benuldies or no benuldies, had not previously been accomplished in the /vg/ League. Now with the gold medal for /vg/'s 4chan Cup team, /ssbg/ have their chance to be truly legendary.
