2014 4chan Winter Cup
2014 4chan Spring Babby Cup
2014 4chan Summer Cup

The 2014 4chan Spring Babby Cup will be the eleventh official 4chan Cup tournament and the third iteration of the Spring Babby Cup series. It is scheduled to be played over four weekends in April 2014. The tournament will feature a mixture of teams that failed to gain promotion from the 2013 4chan Autumn Babby Cup, teams who were relegated from the 2014 4chan Winter Cup, and teams that would have played to qualify from the season's cancelled qualifiers.

This will be the fourth cup under 4chan Cup Commissioner DrBorisG !!9Egy5BjxCDo, and the second one to be hosted with Pro Evolution Soccer 2014. The cup's host board this year shall be /toy/, after they came first in the 2013 4chan Autumn Babby Cup.

For some teams, this is the first time they will compete in a Spring Babby Cup. They are: /adv/ (last time they were in a Spring Babby Cup, they were disqualified before playing), /e/, /fit/, /gd/, /hm/, /jp/, /lgbt/, /out/, /s4s/, /tg/, /vr/ and /wsg/. For some teams, this is the first time they will ever be in a Babby Cup. These teams are: /out/ and /wsg/

With the record number of teams competing in this tournament following the merging of the qualifying and main stages of the Babby Cup, the event has been commonly referred to as the Mega Babby.

Competitors

As many as forty teams will compete at this tournament. In a new initiative entry of all teams will depend on an expression of interest to compete from the management of each invited board. The provisional entrants can be categorised as follows:

Granted entry after the 2014 4chan Spring Babby Cup Qualifiers event was cancelled:

Failed to advance from the 2013 4chan Autumn Babby Cup:

Failed to provide an export for the 2014 4chan Winter Cup:

Relegated from the 2014 4chan Winter Cup:

Sign-up

Managers of each team are required to sign up for participation.

Rules

The tournament features two stages: the group stage followed by the knockout stage, both stages will be played in PES14's exhibition mode in order to not allow motivation/heart from causing teams to snowball over time.

The group stage is played using a round-robin format, in which each team will play each other team in the group once. The top two teams from each group after all matches have been played advance to the knockout stage.

The ranking of teams within groups is determined as follows:

  1. Greatest number of points in group matches
  2. Greatest goal difference in group matches
  3. Greatest number of goals scored in group matches
  4. Head-to-head results.
  5. If any four teams remain level after applying the above criteria, two tiebreaker matches are played with extra-time and penalties in the result of a tied score after regulation time. The 1st placed team in the group aganst the 3rd placed team and the 2nd placed team vs 4th placed team. Placements are determined by seeding, if teams are in the same pot head-to-head will be used, if still tied it's entirely random.
  6. If any three teams remain level after applying the above criteria, the tiebreaker is whoever has the best result against the bottom-placed team in the group. If two teams are still tied, see below. If three teams are still tied, the three teams will be split off to a mini-group in the usual round-robin format. If the teams are still tied, a penalty shootout round-robin will be played again with the three teams. If it's still tied, a coin-flip round-robin will be done, and repeated until two teams advance.
  7. If any two teams remain level after applying the above criteria, a tiebreaker match will be played with extra-time and penalties in the result of a tied score after regulation time.

The knockout stage is played using a single elimination bracket, in which teams play each other in one-off matches with extra time and penalty shootouts used to decide the winner in the result of tied scores. It begins with the round of 16 in which the winner of each group plays against the runner-up of another group. This is followed by the quarter-finals, the semi-finals, the third-place match (contested by the losing semi-finalists), and the final. There will be a draw for each knockout round. The mechanism of the draws for each round is as follows:

  1. In the draw for the round of 16, the eight group winners will be seeded, and the eight group runners-up will be unseeded. The seeded teams will be drawn against the unseeded teams. Teams from the same group cannot be drawn against each other.
  2. In the draws for the quarter-finals onwards, there will be no seedings, and teams from the same group can be drawn against each other.

Two yellow cards (issued in separate matches) or a dismissal (red card) mean that a player is suspended for his/her team's next scheduled match. Yellow cards are wiped twice:

  1. At the end of the group stages
  2. At the end of the semi-finals

Red cards are never wiped and a player will have to serve a suspension in the next match, even if they are in the knockout stage.

Draw

The draw for the cup will take place at 17:00 UTC on Saturday, March 22, 2014. For the first time since the 2012 4chan Spring Babby Cup, ranking points will not be used for a group stage draw.

The eight best finishers of the 2014 4chan Winter Cup (judged by performance in the group stage of that event) will be placed in Pot 1, the next eight in Pot 2 and the eight best non-advancing teams of the 2013 4chan Autumn Babby Cup in Pot 3. As /pol/ and /fa/ were denied entry into the 2014 Winter Cup, they take the place of their replacements in that event, /asp/ and /gif/, in Pot 3 respectively. All remaining teams (those originally intending to participate in the Spring Babby Cup Qualifiers event) are placed in Pot 4.

Pot assignment assumes the participation of all forty invited teams. As such, the following is subject to alteration.

Pot 1 Pot 2 Pot 3 Pot 4

Teams will be drawn randomly from each pot into groups. Each group will contain one team from Pot 1, one team from Pot 2, one team from Pot 3 and two teams from Pot 4, forming eight groups each with five teams.

Note: It may be that there shall be 7 teams (six with 5 teams and one with 4 teams) if /fa/ do not sign up in time.
