The /sp/artans Football Club is a simulated professional football team founded in August 2011, representing /sp/, the 4chan board dedicated to sports. They won the 2013 4chan Winter Cup, and also won the 2012 4chan Summer Cup before the title was revoked due to the Dragongate, making them for a time the first and only team to have won two Elite competitions. They also held the 1st position in the cup rankings from January 2012 to May 2013, the longest time the position was held so far.

The club's popularity among the proud posters of /sp/ has made them susceptible to negative press. Accusations of rigging lead to the Match Fixing Scandal in early January 2012, the team was heavily involved in the Dragongate scandal as well, and their almost systematic shitposting on other boards in the event /sp/ participate in a match is often cited as one of the possible reasons for the global cup ban by the 4chan moderation.

/sp/'s main rivals are without a doubt /a/, who knocked them out twice out of the cup on top of being dirty weeaboos, but they also have minor rivalries with /k/, /toy/, /tg/, /v/, /fit/, and potentially any board who knocks them out of the cup (/gd/ and /i/ we're looking at you) or have a fanbase as rambuctious as theirs.

History

For earlier history: /sp/ History

2014 - The end of an era, we babbies now

Following a surprisingly early exit from the last cup, the GOATs looked to redeem themselves in the 2014 4chan Winter Cup.

It looked like /sp/ had an easy group, but just like in the glory days, /sp/ struggled and got close wins against smaller teams, this time 1-0 and 2-1 wins over /lgbt/ and /f/ respectively. Any concern over /sp/'s attack was killed off in their last group stage match of this cup: despite having less than half of /g/'s shots, the /sp/artans got a 3-1 win, which meant /sp/ topped their group. Everything looked good at this point, and even though /sp/ would have to face none other than /a/ in the round of 16, the fans dared to dream.

For the first half of the epic rematch between /sp/ and /a/, it looked like the GOATs had the advantage, but the ball simply never went into the net. In the second half, everything fell apart. /a/ was suddenly dominating the possession, and /sp/ was looking clueless.

Finally, /a/ got their one goal, and that was all they needed. /sp/'s gold players were rendered completely useless in this match.

With that bitter end to what looked to be a longer run, /sp/ looked to the future with hope. After all, the team had topped their group, meaning that there was no need to worry about relegation anymore.

At least, that's how it seemed back then. Once the 2014 4chan Summer Cup came around, the heat was on and /sp/ could not handle it. The GOATs were placed in group A, which put them against the defending champions of /trv/. There was also /wsg/ and /gd/, but no /sp/artan cared about those teams: in their minds, those teams were nobodies and the implication that both of them would go through was preposterous.

In a sick twist of fate, that is exactly what happened. Everything had started off well for /sp/, with Le Cut Inside Man actually cutting inside and scoring the first goal of the cup. On top of starting the cup with a win, they drew against /trv/ afterwards. It wasn't looking perfect, but 4 points after two matches was not a bad start at all.

Then /gd/, with a cheeky smiley formation, of all things, scored two late goals against /sp/. Just like that, /sp/'s elite era was killed. /gd/ just needed to win 2-0 to take second place away from /sp/, sending the former champions to a Babby Cup for the first time ever.

Chaos ensued in the /sp/ game threads after this. While the match day continued, all sorts of discussion among fans went on. The /sp/artan management for this cup was immediately sacked. It wasn't even like Loli's situation where there were people voting for him to come back, >Moyes and >Edgar were almost unanimously voted out of the team.

Some say this needed to happen sooner: the team was getting weak results in cups after the 2013 4chan Winter Cup. Dragongate lowered the fan involvement with the team, but relegation sparked new life into the fanbase. The previously discussed tournament to decide the new manager would finally happen weeks after the disastrous Summer Cup. After a wild ride and the best tournament PES14 1.12 had ever seen, Art Vandelay emerged victorious, beating Bochumbru  !!vij0cTUzxLY >4:3 a.e.t. in a thrilling final. As Art Vandelay continued to show strength in test cups, /sp/ dared to dream again. Much to their dismay, disaster struck in the first match for /sp/ in the Autumn Babby Cup. The infamous /vp/ defeated /sp/ 3-2 in a match that left fans very bitter after numerous autistmal tactical pauses.

Art Vandelay's words after the match only added fuel to the fire because he basically said "muh stats." In the matches that followed, /sp/ showed more flair as they got wins against /cgl/, and /y/. All they had to do was draw the next match against /i/, but of course, /sp/'s defense went back to being horrendously leaky and thus, /sp/ lost 4-2, conceded the fastest goal in cup history, and stayed down in the >babbies.

These events led to Art Vandelay resigning/being sacked, leaving managerial duties in the hands of his co manager and runner up of The Decision, Bochumbru  !!vij0cTUzxLY.

Colors and Mascot

/sp/ is maroon, orange, black and white.

Maroon: R173 G17 B12
Orange: R200 G85 B5

For the first 4chan World Cup, /sp/ wore an all white kit with a simplistic green logo. Before the 2012 Winter Cup the team wore blue but eventually settled on the current iconic maroon and orange home kit, based on real world Italian divegrass team AS Roma. For away matches, /sp/ wears solid black kit with orange details. To continue the theme that the club's number one goalkeeper is DA BEARS, the uniform for the goalkeeper is a near representation of the uniform of the handegg team, the Chicago Bears.

The mascot of the club is Paul the Goat (named after the legendary Paul the Octopus), who has gained worldwide fame for his alleged psychic powers. When presented with two boxes containing goat food decorated with the club crest of the two teams who are about to play in a game, Paul has successfully picked the winning team 100% of the time from 25 attempts.

Two logos have been used to represent /sp/ Football Club. While one is the official logo and the other pointless, both are alright to use when depicting the /sp/ Club.

Image Description
Sp logo.png The famous logo of /sp/ Fooball Club and currently the most widely used, it depicts Paul the Goat standing proud on an image of a Spartan soldier. The nickname of the club is the /sp/artans, which is the reason for the Spartan on the logo. The star under the Spartan is a representation of /sp/'s first cup victory in the 4chan summer cup. Football came home that night.
Sp logo 2.png The lesser used logo. Paul the Goat is given orange colored horns and a shawl with the /sp/ name on it. While a lesser used logo, it is quite a classic among die-hard fans of the club.

Supporters

/sp/ is known to have some of the most passionate fans in the game. Due to this passion, /sp/artans are often seen as whiners by other boards, especially in the wake of the 2012 SC Bracket Scandal. Due to this, /sp/ was the winner of the Worst Fans Award in that cup. However, /sp/ does boast some of the most supportive fans in all of 4chan, participating in the most watched game of the 2012 4chan Summer Cup. After claiming victory in this cup, /sp/ was flooded with celebratory "MESSIMESSIMESSI" and "THANK YOU BASED TORRES" posts.

Rivalries

Board Rivalries

A icon.png /a/ (The Derby of /sp/art/a/ or /El Clásico)

The biggest derby in the game. A battle between GOATs of /sp/orts and the Men of /a/nime to see who is the greater champion. There is a lot of history between these teams, and it's not all pretty, beginning in the 2011 4chan Cup Semi Finals, a moment /a/ refers to as Yamakan saving Anime while /sp/ often refers to it as BasedChoke. The 2 teams did not meet in an official match until the 2013 Spring Babby Cup friendlies, and did not meet in an Official Cup game until the 2014 Winter Cup. Both teams have won Summer cups by this time, and the feud was reignited with /sp/ winning a friendly for the first time ever against /a/. However, /a/ leads /sp/ 2 games to 0 under the major cup competitions. Tournament matches between /sp/ and /a/ have been dubbed as "El Classico".

Asp icon.png /asp/ (The Not-Sports Derby)

Wherever there's a WWE thread on /sp/, there is sure to be at least one person who will tell WWE fans that pro wrestling is fake and that it belongs on /asp/. Combine that with /asp/'s users being quite different from the more obnoxious /sp/ users, and you have a nasty rivalry brewing. In the 4chan cup, these teams have completely different mentalities as well, with /sp/ angrily sacking managers if they don't win cups, and /asp/ practicing the concept of patience with their managers. Due to some major changes being discussed for the 4chan cup's format, perhaps /sp/ and /asp/ could face each other in an actual cup match to settle matters once and for all.

V icon.png /v/ (The e-sports Derby)

/sp/ and /v/ are intense rivals in a feud that is essentially the alphas vs. the weeaboo gaming nerds, and this rivalry was only made worse after /sp/ sent /v/ to the Loser's Bracket in 2011. /v/ is also jealous of /sp/'s endless creativity and epic maymays, as well as their ability to handle the banter.

Team Rivalries

Toy icon.png /toy/

The rivalry began after /sp/ eliminated /toy/ twice from the Knockouts, first time in the 2012 Summer Cup Semi-Finals and the second time in the 2013 Winter Cup finals. Due to both /toy/ and /sp/ arguably being the best two teams within the 4chan Cup, /toy/'s desire to dethrone the current dominance of /sp/ has quickly grown.

K icon.png /k/

A rivalry born during the 2012 Winter Cup, when /k/ humiliated /sp/ in friendlies and then defeated the /sp/artans in the final; another chapter of the rivalry was written in the 2012 Summer Cup when /sp/ met /k/ in a quarterfinal and dispatched them with relative impunity.

G icon.png /g/

I shit you not m8's this is a fookin rivalry, and /g/ will one day be the team to relegate us. /sp/ first met /g/ in the "Do or Die" 2013 Summer Cup final group game needing to win by 2 or more goals to progress at the expense of /jp/. Goals from USA USA USA, Lelbron and some fine goalkeeping by DA BURRS achieved just that as /sp/ won 2-0. Their next meeting came in the group stages of the next Elite Cup, the 2014 Winter Cup, this time it was /g/'s "Do or Die" game needing just a win or high scoring draw to progress. Unfortunately, even after Tidus putting /g/ ahead, goals from MESSI >Moyes and USA USA USA put progression well out of /g/'s reach.

Stadium

The pipeline after which /sp/'s stadium is named.

/sp/'s current home is the Transatlantic Semen Pipeline Stadium, named in remembrance of Murrika's selfless donations to impoverished Yurop. Plans for the stadium's re-construction in PES 2014 have been submitted.

Trivia

  • Of the six teams to win the 4chan cup, /sp/ is the only one to win with a perfect record of 6-0-0 (/a/ finished 8-0-1 and /k/ finished 5-0-1).
  • /sp/ became the first board to have a sticky thread for a 4chan Cup event during the 2012 Winter Cup.
