/mlp/ - Pony is a team that poni poni. We would poni a poni nonsexually (although the roster may sometimes imply otherwise). We love the pone.
Introduction
/mlp/ is a fiery, spirited team that has a loyal fanbase who cheer on the pones on their way to a Cup Championship. Coming from a board and fandom that has been shunned for their deviancy and weirdness, they band together for their love of pone through thick and thin, and the 4chan Cups are no exception. Devotion is high and cheering is loud whenever the team plays a match; a strong point that has been bolstered even further since winning the 2013 4chan Spring Babby Cup, the 2015 4chan Summer Cup, the 2016 4chan Summer Cup, 2024 4chan Spring Babby Cup, and 2025 4chan Winter Cup. /mlp/ is a devoted team, with an even more devoted fanbase cheering them on.

Team History
The story of /mlp/ memegrass starts in the Summer of 2011 when an unassuming /v/ browser called Germanbro streamed the very first 4chan Cup. Sixteen teams, each representing a 4chan board, made up this First Founding. And all was right with the world until, on March 1, 2012, there arose the fateful cry: “When does /mlp/ play?”
Like any prank that goes too far, things started innocently enough. On March 8, /mlp/ joined the ranks of the Founding Babbies, a slate of newly inducted teams. That first Babby Cup in Spring 2012 was a simpler, sillier time. Germanbro included /mlp/ as a joke team, an unmanaged, rigged punching bag that existed to be blown the fuck out. Despite winning its first ever match, besting /int/ 4-1 during the Spring Friendlies, /mlp/ took one beating after another in the Babby that followed. The ponies bottomed their group with one point and finished in 18th place, ahead of such stiff competitors as /po/ and /soc/.
In the months that followed, several anons banded together to reboot their beloved team: Normlperson (applefag), who became /mlp/’s first manager, NBD (twifag), self-designated wiki autist and later a manager himself, and several testers. The memes flowed hot and heavy with the arrival of the 2012 Summer Friendlies just ten days later, when goalkeeper Derpy Hooves earned her legendary nickname “Safest Hooves” after saving a critical penalty shot from DA HOOD to secure victory over /f/.
The 2012 Autumn Babby showed the first glimmers of /mlp/’s potential, as they racked up their first competitive wins and advancement to an Elite, reaching the knockouts and going on to lose 1-3 versus /tv/ in the quarterfinals.
High hopes for /mlp/’s Elite premier were quickly dashed, as the team bombed out of its Winter 13 group with losses to /a/ and /m/. A fierce performance the previous Autumn followed by immediate regulation in Winter seeded /mlp/’s reputation as a yo-yo team. While some predicted that /mlp/ would quickly return to the elites, none anticipated what would happen along the way. Ramping up to Spring 2013, /mlp/’s efforts were bolstered by the addition of a new tester and future manager, ShadowTester (flutterfag).
/mlp/ kicked off the Spring 13 Babby with their biggest ever win, trouncing future talisman /u/ 5-1. A subsequent loss to /o/ and narrow victory over /r9k/ were enough to send /mlp/ back to the elites, but Spring was far from over for the little ponies that could. The Round of 16 saw /mlp/ squaring off against the deviants of /d/ in what would become to many the most celebrated /mlp/ match of that era, a tense one-one draw settled in a penalty shootout in which Safest Hooves herself would step forward to seize victory. From there, the horsefuckers stampeded past /fa/ and /x/ to avenge themselves against fan favorite /tv/ in the final. A 4-0 victory in which every medal scored proved decisively that /mlp/ has what it takes to win a cup.
However, the celebration was cut short a few days later when the creatively-named /mlp/ tester Testerbro was unmasked as Dragonfag and summarily expulsed from the team. These were the dark days of Dragongate, a scandal which nearly ended the Cup – the revelation that seventeen managers and testers were actually all a single autist rigging games for fun. Thankfully, /mlp/ was cleared by the commissioner of any wrongdoing, and a few days later the team was joined by Test Pony (rarifag), a tester who went on to serve as a manager and one of /mlp/’s resident aesthetics experts. At the same time, NBD gracefully retired.
The 2013 Summer Cup saw /mlp/ maintain their elite placement for the first time, as a record setting 2,902 viewers tuned in to watch /mlp/ lose to /v/ in a quarterfinal. Among those viewers was the next addition to the management team: BackgroundPony (rarifag), who signed on in November. This new addition was balanced by the departure of Normlperson.
While /mlp/ did not participate in the 2013 Autumn Babby, the board’s autism remained undimmed as it designed the cup’s first fan scarves. The iconic scarf began shipping worldwide on November 8, 2013 and has gone on to become a universal symbol of not only the team, but the board itself throughout the fandom. Containment was breached when no less than Lauren Faust herself modeled the scarf in an appreciative Tweet.
2014 was a relatively lean year for /mlp/, though not without memery. /mlp/ suffered its worst defeat to that date in the Winter Friendlies, losing 0-3 against /toy/. Later that season, on March 3, /mlp/ beat /h/ to take third place in the Winter Cup, generating a perfect storm of salt when the broader cup community noticed a piece of /mlp/ fan art in which the artist had preemptively included a trophy. After /mlp/ took third, the artist converted it into a “Third Place” trophy, triggering an uproar among AB/mlp/ fans who took this as an indication of /mlp/’s arrogance. In the heat of that fire, the Third Place Trophy meme was forged, which has been coveted and circulating amongst third place teams ever since.
Immediately after the Winter Cup concluded, /mlp/ celebrated their triumph by signing on two new managers: Emulpee (twifag) and Pony_me_bro (ponkfag).
However, this would prove to be the high point of the year, as that Summer the cup would endure unprecedented catastrophe, a torment that traumatized survivors later described only by the mysterious epithet of “1.12”. Summer 14 claimed the shins of most every big market team in attendance, ejecting /mlp/ straight back to the Babbies.
The punishment continued in Autumn, when /mlp/’s knockout run was cut short by a hyper aggressive performance from /wg/, a would-be massacre prevented only by a record-setting 13 saves from Derpy Hooves. Autumn marked Test Pony’s final cup as a manager, though he would continue for more than a year as an aesthetics helper.
Back in the elites for Winter 15, /mlp/ introduced the first custom modeled stadium in cup history, a “wide awake nightmare” known as the Racist Barn. /mlp/ bowed out to /h/ in the Round of 16, losing a closely contested match 3-2. Manager ShadowTester retired the next day. After this modest placement, the horsefuckers entered Summer with something to prove. /mlp/’s efforts were bolstered by a new manager, Darkbow (dashfag), ahead of the new season.
Summer 2015 saw a sleepy group stage /mlp/ come alive in the knockouts, trampling teams with a relentless intensity that left commissioner DrBorisG wondering whether this was in fact the same team. And so it was, on August 16, the goalkeeping blunder heard ‘round the world ushered in the end of times, at least for a few days. /mlp/ had done the unthinkable, picking up their first star after a memetastic victory over unlikely rival /g/.
In the following weeks, horsefuckers rode high on the wave of hype, collaborating on an updated logo design and organizing a large group buy for the cup’s first ever replica jerseys.
/mlp/ opened 2016 with a new tradition, streaming the inaugural Friendships Tests in late January. An outgrowth of preseason testing, the Friendship Tests gave fans a sneak peek behind the scenes of /mlp/ testing and export design. Though the abortive /mlp/ League initially cast a shadow of suspicion over the event, the Friendship Tests (and their sequel, the FAGs) quickly allayed such concerns and became a highly anticipated event among fans with even less going on in their lives than average.
/mlp/ kicked off Winter 2016 with style in a brand new custom stadium, the Cirrus Maximus, created by a newly-joined aesthetics expert and later manager, Noteperson (applefag). However, fear would quickly set in that the new pitch was cursed ground (or, more accurately, cloud) when /mlp/ failed to win a single home game that season. Keeping to tradition, /mlp/ struggled to find its footing in a newly minted version of PES and finished the Winter Cup with a Round of 16 loss to a vengeful /gd/. Manager Pony_me_bro closed out the season by announcing his retirement.
If the cup community was shocked by the reigning champions’ early defeat in Winter, it was even less prepared for the Summer to follow. /mlp/ scraped through its Summer 16 group with just four points and a -1 GD, only to come roaring back in the knockouts to cinch back-to-back summer championships and claim a second star. /mlp/ became the first team to legitimately win two elite cups and thwarted /o/’s year in one fell swoop, cementing their status as the cup’s villains for the foreseeable future. Amidst the rage and revelry, /mlp/’s long-standing manager, BackgroundPony. took his leave. In his place, MagicBlue (trixiefag) stepped forth to manager.
However, the first half of 2017 would prove disastrous for /mlp/, as the team, perhaps still hung-over from their summer revelry, crashed out of Winter 17, even as /fit/ matched their achievement of winning two stars in two years. This rocky start would only get worse in the Spring Babby, as /mlp/ 0-pointed their group and doomed themselves to play in their first ever fetus. Finishing in 31st place, the team was denied even the dubious consolation of a Wooden Spoon. After this unfortunate run, Darkbow took his leave, while Tsparx (rarifag) joined in his stead.
Thankfully, the second half of 2017 saw a significant revival of the team’s fortunes, as /mlp/ stormed through the 2017 Autumn Babby Qualifier into the Babby proper, then secured advancement back to Winter, reaching a QF where they lost to /a/ 1-3.
The 2018 Winter Cup proved to be everything for /mlp/ that Winter 17 was not. Seeded in Group G, /mlp/ not only secured what remains their largest-ever win, trouncing /fit/ 6-0, but also faced /u/ – a team, it was noted, that had seen /mlp/ advance to the finals in every cup where they had been matched. After topping the group, /mlp/ faced a nail-biter 1-1 Ro16 outing against /int/ which was settled on penalties, only to do the same against /x/ in the quarterfinals, winning a 2-2 match on penalties. A relatively procedural 0-1 win over /h/ then brought /mlp/ to their third ever Elite Final – again facing their talisman and group stage rival, /u/. In a match that is broadly considered to be one of the most exciting in 4chan Cup history, a record 3,389 autists tuned in to watch /mlp/ and /u/ grapple in the tightest of chess-matches, first proceeding to extra time, then to /mlp/’s third PK shoot-out in a single knockout bracket off the back of an incredible Princess Twilight goal at 120+2’ to salvage the match. It was nearly the perfect game, save for one flaw – after a grueling 10 rounds of PKs, /mlp/ would go down in history, likely forever, as the team to come closest to winning a star without doing so. HI ANON’s legendary blowing of her penalty kick so perfectly embodied the spirit of her meme that she would become an enduring fixture of mingled scorn and adoration for the team henceforth.
Following this dizzying turn of events, MagicBlue retired from managing, replaced by Tuvalu (FOTMfag).
Alas, /mlp/ was unable to match their stunning performance in Summer 18, relegated from a group that saw /int/ get its revenge for their defeat the prior Winter paired with a loss to /jp/ that was unable to be averted even by double 90’+ goals from /mlp/.
However, the following Autumn 18 would witness perhaps the most memetastic group stage advancement in /mlp/’s long history, as a 1-2 loss to /o/ functionally became a win, allowing /mlp/ to advance to KOs on 3 points and a -2 GD. /mlp/ would then proceed to a 1-3 QF loss to /vp/, their place in Winter secure. As Winter approached, Tsparx elected to stand down from management, replaced by longtime aesfag Noteperson.
2019 would prove to be a year of solid but unspectacular performances for /mlp/. Beginning with the Winter Cup, /mlp/ would easily advance, 9 pointing a group stage that notably included their first ever face-off with /sp/ and a blow-out win over good friend /s4s/. The knockouts would prove more challenging, and /mlp/ first took /int/ to PKs in the R016, advancing over them in an echo of Winter 18. The team would then experience a truly ridiculous QF match against /vg/ in which both sides would score own-goals, Derpy would become the first player in cup history with 2 own goals, and the match would end at a dizzying 6-6 after 120 minutes, only for /mlp/’s luck to run out during PKs with a miss by Princess Twilight.
Nevertheless, buoyed by this final day appearance, /mlp/ entered the 2019 Summer Cup in good spirits, which were lifted yet further by the coincidence of the finals weekend with the last and largest BronyCon. The management’s ranks were bolstered shortly before the start of the cup by the addition of Sita (rarifag). In the Cup itself, /mlp/ again easily topped their group, advancing together with cousin board /co/ to the knockouts. In the final weekend, with large audiences of horsefuckers cheering on the team live from BC, /mlp/ first stampeded to a Ro16 victory over the NEETs of /r9k/, then on the final day squared off against their April Fools’ companion /pol/. Alas, /mlp/ struggled throughout that match, ultimately losing 1-2 for their second QF exit of the year. With the end of the season, Emulpee and Tuvalu elected to retire.
To the surprise of many, given /mlp/’s history of strong performance, 2020 would mark the start of /mlp/’s first real elite drought.
[Coming soon: 2020-2025]
So ends our tale, though the story is far from over. Every cup season marks a new and exciting chapter in a saga of passion, perseverance, fortune, and more than a little autism. /mlp/ has savored victory and been humbled by defeat time and again. And at every step of that long and winding road, the team has been carried by the devotion of its fans. /mlp/ is more than just a virtual divegrass team. It – we – are loved by some and tolerated by most. We’ve been hated and even penetrated, once or twice. We’re Giddy Up spammers and content creators. We’re diehard cup followers and casual fans alike. And win or lose, we keep coming back. That’s why, whatever awaits /mlp/ in the months and years to come, we horsefuckers are ready for it.
As for everyone else, they better get ready too.
