If you doubt the power of the Cup to create stories all its own, allow me to tell you the story of a certain insane Mexican.

It was one day, as a man with a grand sombrero of melted cheese trudged through the searing North American wilderness, that a mirage appeared before his eyes. None alive now know if it was merely the heat of the midday desert sun, or the dwindling bottles of tequila hooked to his belt. But as the man was urged on by a buffering vision of a German in a winter hat, he would soon find himself at the foot of a grand stadium.

With his stomach nearly empty and his life fading, he came to in a locker room lined end to end with culinary delights. A sample here of fast food, a sip of perfect coffee, an exquisite braise of pork ribs, and, as luck would have it -- some good old-fashioned 'go 'za. Though the players assembled were clueless as to why a seemingly random immigrant had found their way into the team lunch, it so happened that they were currently in the market for an eleventh player.

They were not prepared for this man to lead them nearly to great victory, nor for him to outscore everyone else. Or for the fans to constantly demand back his food-tipped hat, so they could celebrate to the ciocarlian fanfares that accompanied his goals. Nor did they expect this man to lead them through their highs and lows, to break the most eldritch of curses, or stay as long as he did.

A moment of silence, Cup fans, for Nachos, one of the old greats. Though mysterious circumstances involving Mexican weed took him away from us all too soon, may his memory serve as a reminder that in the Cup, players need not to be born great, if they can be made great.

"Flying standards of azure and magenta, they settled on the plains, populous and prosperous. Theirs was a land far more populous than any other, commanding a far fiercer (almost fanatical) devotion among its people than any other of the nations of Rigterra could muster. And though the /sp/artans had greater men and the /mu/tants greater leaders, it was the /a/nons who triumphed in battle, their devoted and cancerous hordes overcoming their brothers in open battle. With the iron will of its people, it was their kingdom that was to be first to rule over the others.

But the Rigger was at work. Though its Lords were devoted and its men loyal, its victorious battles came to nothing in the face of lost wars. As war after war was lost, the men of the kingdom of /a/ came to increasingly rely dogmatically on the few. Whether Titans or Cattle Herders, they all fought valiantly but ultimately crumbled as the weight of numbers became the burden of responsibility. And when they crumbled, so did the kingdom they represented. Though their people were loyal and their Lords well-loved, their kingdom, too, failed as the men they trusted to bear the weight of duty faltered..."

Few teams are as storied -- or as long-suffering -- as /a/. The winners of the nascent, inaugural Cup, common wisdom once held that /a/ was a team too big to fail. Until they fell. And fell. And fell.

But banter is cheap; achievement is not. Has your team ever started all the way at the bottom of the bracket, saved anime, and gone on to take it all? Or have they ever triumphed over every biggest rival in one of Cup history's greatest days? Or been on the delivering end of Brazil? Or all three at once? Can your hollow, fanless team fill the void with banter when what it needs is heart?

Mockery is temporary; suffering is ephemeral; but history is permanent. As this chapter of the chronicles of Rigterra draws to a close, reflect on the story of a team with some of the Cup's greatest highs and cruelest lows -- and understand that in the fickle universe of virtual divegrass, that team could be yours. Will the new decade see new greats in Cup history, or can /a/ deliver a grim reminder once more who the One True Elite was, is, and always will be?
