2013 4chan Summer Cup
2013 4chan Autumn Babby Cup

The 2013 4chan Summer Cup was the eighth official 4chan Cup tournament and the third iteration of the Summer Cup series, marking two years since the inaugural Cup. It was played from August 16 to September 1, 2013 on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with the exception of Friday, August 30, 2013. The tournament featured a mixture of teams that qualified from the 2013 4chan Spring Babby Cup and teams that maintained their Elite status following the 2013 4chan Winter Cup.

This was the debut top-tier tournament appearance for /c/, /cgl/, /f/, /lit/, /po/ and /u/.

As winner of the previous Elite competition, /sp/ were the host board of this event. This was the first Cup under 4chan Cup Commissioner DrBorisG !!tgJi9upHCoV.

Competitors

Thirty-two teams competed at this tournament. Sixteen of the teams qualified by advancing past the group stage of the 2013 4chan Spring Babby Cup, and another sixteen qualified by advancing past the group stage of the 2013 4chan Winter Cup.

In light of Dragongate, qualifiers from the Spring Babby Cup were altered significantly.

The thirty-two teams were the following:

Controversies

Data Execution Prevention Controversy

Windows' Data Execution Prevention (DEP) system appeared to influence AI behaviour in PES in the opening matches of the tournament. While the full effects were unknown, certain effects included:

  • Mirco-level behaviour
    • Surrendering of possession at kick-off (passing directly to the opposition)
    • Players making backheels into space or to the opposition when unchallenged
    • Passing the ball out of play for throw-ins when unchallenged
    • Greater frequency of yellow cards (contentious)
  • Macro-level behaviour
    • Rubberband match behaviour with high-scoring score draws occurring with greater frequency (contentious)
    • Blowout matches in which one team dominated the opposition and won by a several-goal margin (contentious)

Examples of significantly-affected matches included but was not limited to:

  • /toy/ v /x/ (passing the ball out of play for throw-ins)
  • /wg/ v /soc/ (high-scoring draw)
  • /tg/ v /u/ (high-scoring draw)
  • /sp/ v /jp/ (high-scoring draw)
  • /mlp/ v /adv/ (unusual kick-off behaviour and erratic backheels)

DrBorisG spent the week following the opening weekend attempting to locate and solve these problems. When it became clear that DEP was responsible for the unusual behaviour, the feature was disabled. AI behaviour normalised noticeably after DEP was disabled. The decision was taken that matches would not be replayed, as this was an effect which all teams had to face in equal measure, though some players, teams and matches appeared to be more affected than others.

Tinker/toy/ Controversy

Main article: Broken /toy/

With /toy/'s survival hopes hanging in the balance as they went into Group A's final match against /c/, in a premeditated move Tinker/toy/ provided very unusual tactics for his team, playing the entire squad out of position, all but destroying /toy/'s hopes of survival. The event brought up difficult and controversial questions regarding manager authority and accountability.

Height Abuse

Main article: Team Height Requirements

As the tournament progressed it became clear that several of the tournament's best-performing sides also carried a significant height advantage over other teams. The top three teams in the cup were also the three tallest teams (each placed in order of their overall height). Many fans began criticizing Commissioner DrBorisG for allowing teams composed of mostly tall players to compete, stating it gives them an unfair advantage over smaller teams. To counteract this, DrBorisG implemented a new set of player height restrictions, announced by Gracen Ivorinne.

Statistics

Main article: 2013 4chan Summer Cup statistics

/mu/ striker MC Ride was the first player to score a goal in the competition, in their 2-0 win against Winter Cup holders /toy/ in the opening match of the tournament. The first hat-trick was scored by /po/ striker Papercut in a 5-0 win against /tv/ on the first matchday. /f/ defender Nevada-tan was credited with the first own goal of the tournament, in her side's 4-1 defeat to /trv/, again on the opening matchday.

/wg/ striker Cunt Destroyer was awarded Golden Boot with an unmatched 10 goals - he scored in all but one match through the tournament. /wg/ attacking midfielder Spacecat was the top assister with an unmatched 8 assists. /mu/'s starting keeper Merzbow won the Golden Glove with 24 saves, nearly doubling the tally of his nearest competitor, Fuckin' Saved of /b/, who managed 13 saves. Merzbow averaged 3.43 saves per match.
